Rebuilding replace oil pump? New tensioner assebly also?
Rebuilding a 2.2NA in the next couple months(buying car now, it is too cold to work on it now -15 right now). Since I'm going to be that deep, and the car has 160k miles, should I change the oil pump, or is there a way to refurbish it myself?
And, when I do the timing belt, would it be wise of me to get the updated tensioner assembly?

You typically want to replace all the pulleys and tensioner. Basically you want all new bearings. If one seizes, it means broken belt and damaged motor, so you just do it when the timing belt gets changed.

Would that include replacing the cam gears? I would figure those are supported by the cam bearings so there should be no need to replace them unless the teeth look worn out for some reason? Thanks

As a follow up on this, anyone wanting to do a timing belt on an older car, you should upgrade to the new tensioner. There is absolutely no reason not to. How do I know? I work in an automotive pulley, tensioner and accessory belt engineering center. |

Thanks pheonix, I'll give the gears a close look for wear and cracking.
