So for all intensive purposes, you can go back to stock completely, like the AP was never there, correct?

Yeah, but you have to unmarry the AP then send your ECU to Cobb to reflash to what was your original stock base map.

What is unmarried to the AP? I guess I'll find out on December 13 when COBB sends my AP for the Outback XT!

Huh?

Where did Trey's post say that you need to send the ECU back to the mothership...

Confused.

Sending the ECU back only applied to some WRX owners that are insistent on getting the EXACT same firmware version shown on the ECU case (even though Subaru themselves often don't even do this!).

It is very difficult, but you have to keep a mindset that ALL Subaru ECUs are unique. What they use in the WRX is nothing like what they use in the Legacy GT. When you unmarry the AP from your 2005 Legacy GT, you get the same original ECU data. No need to send in for additional reprogramming.

If you want to, we're happy to take care of you but it would be as useful as ti.... well, you get the point.

Cheers,
Trey @ COBB Tuning

Trey - thanks again for keeping us informed. For the ignorant and uninformed (like myself), what type of different firmware versions are there?

I think that most folks would like their ECU to reflect a valid CalId for the model year of their WRX after a divorce. I'm pretty sure that the owner of a 2003 WRX would not be happy to find he that after a divorce that he owned an ECU whose CalID was valid only on a 2002 WRX.

It's interesting to know that Cobb "adopted" many of the calibration tables from the A2ZJ700J reflash, but not any of the code. That reflash is, of course, the famous one which cured the 2004 STi "ping problem." Folks who can see the 2004 STi ECU tables (such as Vishnu) have speculated that table value changes weren't the full (or, even, the most important) changes made.

How does Cobb know that it hasn't impemented only half of the changes (the other half being algorithmic) introduced by A2ZJ700J? Why didn't Cobb re-base its 2004 STi reflash using the A2ZJ700J microcode as a base?

We'll be providing a software download patch that can be used on 2004 STI AccessPORTs that will update the "Revert to Stock" map to the newer A2ZJ700J CID and CVN.
I don't see anyone from Cobb mention (here or on their forums) explicitly what the status of the MY2004 WRX is. After a "Revert to Stock" is the ECU returning the correct CVN? If not, will Cobb put out a patch?

Hello all,
I know this has been talked about latley , we recived some information from ECUTEK today on this, so I thought I would share.

There has been some legislation implemented in some parts of the world stating that all Model Year 05 vehicles from all manufacturers must be capable of displaying three pieces of data.

They are:

VIN - Vehicle Identification Number. This is effectively the chassis number and is unique to each vehicle. This will not change when a an ECU is reprogrammed.

CIN - Calibration Identification Number. This is an identification number stored in each ECU that shows which calibration file should have been programmed into this particular ECU. This will not change when the ECU is reprogrammed with Ecu TeK tools.

CVN - Calibration Verification Number. This is a number which is the result of a calculation carried out based on the calibration data in the ECU. This number will change when the ECU is programmed with anything other than the factory data.

The legislation also states that these numbers must all be capable of being read by proprietary OBD readers and the numbers may be check during routine emission tests against data which has to be supplied by law from the manufacturers.

The purpose of this legislation is to enable the tester to establish if the ECU has been modified in any way or has been changed from car to car.

This mail is to explain that only the CVN will change after the ECU has been re-programmed using EcuTek software. However although it does also store additional information in the ECU, if the original factory calibration is flashed into the ECU the original CVN will also be restored although there will still be an EcuTeK license stored within it.

Hope this helps!!

thx

not sure why some one hasn't said this but cvn sure looks an aweful lot like a *COUGHCOUGH* checksum

that said

is intersting .. it contradicts the point

is the cvn a checksum of the mappings and traps for the error codes only?

does the cvn change when a access port base map is changed?

I was under the impression that it was a more complicated algorithm and not a simple checksum.

So if you have an EcuTek reflash, you have to flash back to stock to get an emissions test? Sounds like a pain in the ass!

I don't think anyone on NASIOC has ever reported that they failed a smog check because of an invalid CVN... just that's it's theoretically possible.

Were any of them 2005MY? Probably not. This could be a problem 6-7 months from now when the first of the 2005MY cars are due for emissions inspection.

Actually any person with an 05 moving to an OBDII state trying to get their car registered they would have to do that.
It would suck big time since the stock ECU map will not run on my car (injectors, turbo etc..).

I guess I would have to do a total unistall if I want to pass or hope that some "workaround" can be found.

cheers

Nick
