Default I miss spirited driving; sway my opinoon.

Hey folks --

About me: i'm 28, newly engaged/home owner -- both this year. I traded in a tastefully modded 2008 VW GTI for a pre-ordered 2012 Impreza 2.0i, CVT, premium, sedan. (my 2nd GTI)

I thought it was the right move, to 'grow out' of the speedy car stage. I thought 4 doors, AWD, great gas mileage, and practicality in general would help me grow up. Well here i am 23K miles later in the Impreza, and I dearly miss having a clutch, gearbox, and the 'fun to drive' element. I'm beyond bored.

I've been looking at gently used 2012 and 2013 WRX hatchbacks (not STI) and feel it's a good fit for what i need. I like the AWD, the drivability, and 5 doors (i missed having a hatch for carrying and lugging stuff around).

Based off my readings on here, I feel like i could fit in the steretypical demographic for most users on on this forum.

Now -- can someone talk some sense into me? For better or for worse? Is this my quarterlife crisis? haha.
2012/2013 Scoob WRX hatch. thanks in advance guys

Update as of 6/19:

....and 8 days later, i'm now the proud owner of a 2013 WRX hatch, base (with a few options), DGM, 2900K on the clock.

Wasn't even on the lot for a week and had yet to be listed as part of their inventory. Got lucky; a woman in her late 40's got tired of driving stick and traded her in and i got a call. Out the door at 25.9K

Thanks for the conversation in this thread everyone!

If you can get good cash/trade on the Impreza towards a decently priced, used WRX then why not?

I'm 38. I can tell you that if you have a passion for speed and it's something you enjoy, you will never be ok with driving a slow car. I tried. After my 450hp 2004 Cobra, I tried to make due with a gas efficient Civic my wife had just because nothing really caught my eye that I wanted to own, so I thought I would see how it went.

Screw that.

After a few months I got a 2008 STi, and was very happy once more.

If you have that love and passion, it will never die or be properly suppressed in my opinion. My wife knows this about me and supports me, so mods are no problem etc..

Do what you love, and don't deny who you are.

Post pics when you get your new ride, I haven't had a more entertaining car than the STi. My 08 met an untimely death at 115k, and I now have a 2013 STi that just got broken in and I love it as much as the one that preceded it.

Good luck!

You pay for performance, so if you can afford it without extending yourself; go for it. If not, enjoy your impreza and get your fun in other, potentially less expensive ways...

If you can avoid the mod bug, are ok with getting around 25-27 mpg at best, the fiance approves the decision, and you're not going to be hurting for money with a potential car payment/extra insurance $$ I say go for it.

Ultimately most people will either say "This isn't something we can decide for you" or "Yes". I can't imagine anyone saying "No" as they don't have the financial/personal details to make that call for you.

I guess asking the same bias demographic as me doesn't help, haha. I do agree, though, the need for speed is something that will never go away.

As for the finance situation, i'm doing OK. It would be nice to save more, but at the cost of happiness!

Per Edmunds/blackbook, my car right trade it right now is about $18,8XX. I owe about $10.4XX for a difference of about 8K. Not a bad downpayment towards a WRX.

25-27 MPG? Is that from experience? I would call that exceptional if true. The 2012/13's call for 19-25, and i usually take that with a grain of salt.

A hatch/wagon would be a great solution if you need a practical car and a fun car at the same time. That's exactly why I went with a wagon in the first place. I wanted something fun that I could also pile people and stuff into as needed.

Consider a Legacy GT sedan or wagon as well. Or even a Forester XT.

As for MPG? I recently did a 600 mile round trip with my car (which is a pretty basic bolt-on COBB stage 2 setup). Netted 32 mpg both times I filled up. Granted it was mostly highway driving and I was driving like a normal human being, not a yahoo. But I was even using the AC for a good portion of the drive.

Normal combined city/highway with some mildly spirited driving I average around 28 mpg.

Hatch for sure. I miss the hatch-ness from when i owned GTIs. Very underrated feature. It's annoying to buy something and wonder, "will it fit in my trunk".

As for the MPGs, that's promising. I'd be a mix of city and highway since it'd also by my daily driver. Having said that, a fun car makes any commute easier.

Having a wagon has made modding it easy! Like when I picked up my G200 catback - it fit. 2 STI seats? - no sweat! One of these days, Americans will figure out what the Europeans have known for years now. Hot hatches rule.

Couldn't agree more on the commute, too. My previous job involved a 50 mile one-way commute 5 days a week. It was always refreshing at the end of the day to roll the windows down and enjoy some exhaust growl and a nice stir through the gears getting on the highway. But that's not at all helpful for mpg's...

Get a WRX. I am almost 38 and have 3 kids (14,13,9) and we all cram in my 05 WRX just fine. Get a hatch WRX.

The other option is to find a cheap miata to play with (safer to fly solo depending on how "spirited" you like to get.

I have a feeling that'll be me in 10 years. Not into Miata's since it would take away from the practicality element. I need this as a daily.

That's from experience. I will admit I do MOSTLY highway driving - I calculate my MPG at the pump, not using the indicator on the clock.

You want to talk quarter life crisis? Look at my profile to the left here.... wrx SEDAN (that get's rallyx'ed a handful of times a year). Miata (for hooning. ONLY.) MGB, for now it's just to sit in and smell when I feel the need, I don't dare drive it in the shape it's in now.

My daughter is 9 months next week, I'm 33. She will inherit the miata. My wife wants a turbo wagon, that's next on our to-do list.

You like fun cars? Buy fun cars. I don't understand your question...

Well, obviously. I've unfortunately learned my lesson that i'm not the kind of person who can give up spirited driving. That's why i'm here! Not too many cars out there are both fun to drive and practical (at least in my price range and what i'm looking for). I'm just trying to gather that a WRX will do that until i can afford that B8 Audi S4 or B5 RS4.

I had to wait until I was 48 to get a WRX. If you can get one now you are old enough to drive it responsibly. Besides, with the wagon and a cargo box the car holds enough for the most loaded-up camping trips.

Don't count out 05-09 LGT / OBXTs. LGTs can be had in wagon / sedan (only 05 wagons can be found in manual transmissions) and 05-09 OBXTs can be found with 5mts. Gas mileage takes a hit compared to an n/a impreza, but the practicality is there, especially in wagon format

I Just purchased a 2012 WRX sedan a little over a month ago and I still feel like a kid once I sit inside of it. I'm a 33 year old full time single parent of 2 and it fit the bill well. I've put over 4k miles on it already. If it's your passion then go for it otherwise you will never be happy with your decisions. The only downside to being a person who loves cars, they will never feel fast enough. I am avoiding any mods for now but damn is it hard.
