Seems like the only possible explanation. Guess europeans must know that wagons are cooler.

A wagon is less than a sedan, but an estate is more than a saloon. Seems right.

The US impreza wagon is the only wagon I've ever seen that is cheaper than its sedan equivilant. If somebody can prove me wrong, I'm happy to admit it. I think that the wagon being cheaper is the best bass ackwards move I've seen yet. (other than if they would make an STi wagon but not sedan ) Even the Legacy wagon is higher than the sedan, and my Impreza wagon cost $1000 over a sedan w/ spoiler. The extra cost is usually a big reason for wagons in general not selling as well as sedans in general.

I'm really surprised that so many people don't realize this. I thought it was just an understood in car pricing like a coupe being more than a sedan (perceived value?)

My guess for lowering the price in the US is to promote wagon sales. Maybe the US is being like a test market for this kind of thing. I'd say that it is working because I doubt that there would be so many wagon owners if you had to pay $1000-1600 more than the current price I can't think of any other logical reason as to why they would "buck the system" in just one country with only one model. If they made the price change in all countries or even with the Legacy as well in US, it would make more sense.

The TS doesn't have the same equipment level as the RS. Therefore, it costs less to manufacture, so it costs less to buy. Check the spec of the UKDM wagon versus the "equivalent" sedan.

I think we're talking more specifically about US WRX Wagon is $500 cheaper than US WRX Sedan. Not TS Wagon vs RS sedan.

in the uk i dont think the demand is what it is here...
wagons/estates are not a hugely popular car there in the UK.
Many prefer coupes/sport sedans to wagons/mini van types.

and remember, it's an island...
everything on an island costs more anyway...
ESPECIALLY when it's "rare" or harder to find than most.

My point was that for wagons and sedans with equal equipment, the wagon sells at a higher price. The fact that the TS has less equipment than the RS making it cheaper is not a fair comparison. As for wagons being less popular in UK, I don't believe that necessarily. In the rest of the world (non-US), the S4 is sold 40:60 sedan:avant. US is sold 85:15. Since Europe is used to hatchbacks, a wagon isn't much different. It's close to a 4 door hatchback, but with extra windows in the rear.

As for things costing more because UK is an island, nah. Transportation for delivery to isle is quite good. They are rare because the import company doesn't feel like they can sell enough of them. The rarity is the importer's discretion. Their cost is higher for wagons just like it is here, so there must be some alterior motive for FHI to charge less to North America dealers?
