Yeah, you're right, EE20 pistons are certainly up to the task although I couldn't find any details regarding what they're made of except for this older article from "TechOn":

http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english...080222/147866/

Quote:
[...]As for the piston, the company used "a high-strength material" that withstands high temperatures and pressures and shorten the compression height (the length between the central axis of the piston pin and the upper surface of the piston) to 43.0mm to downsize the block.[...]
There's a picture of the EE20 piston in the article; somehow, I don't think the FA20 turbo piston will look anything like it.
Anyway, eventually, someone will open an FA20 up and we shall find out.

When the '08 STi came out and it was only available in a 5-door, Subaru fans weren't very happy. They brought back the sedan version in '11. Do you guys think that they'd go a step further and bring back the 2 door version with the 4th Gen WRX?

I'm also curious just from a naming standpoint how things will pan out. It's been odd explaining to folks that I own a 4th Generation Impreza but the current WRX is a 3rd Generation design. Will these generational classifications continue off the same Impreza branch? Or will the WRX, since it'll be it's own thing, start over with "1st Generation WRX"? Not that it's super important, but as far as vehicle history goes, I'm kind of interested where it goes from here.

Reverend, seems like you have a lot of " 'splainin " to do. Me, not so much.
I hope they bring back the real 5 door wagon!

You wouldn't start over the generation designation since the WRX has existed in the U.S. since MY2002. Even though they've separated, the models are still going to continue being what they've been for 10+ years.

So are we still speculating that we're either not getting MY2014 WRX/STI or just a very, very short run of MY2014 before the MY2015 are revealed?

I am thinking that the 2012 is the First Generation WRX/STI, since they have dropped the Impreza name and chassis. The 2015 version will be the Second Generation.

I'll go on record as saying that I wouldn't be bummed out if the new WRX/STI *ONLY* came in 3 and 5 door "hot hatches". In fact, I'm regretting that I got a sedan in the first place. If Subie did offer a turbocharged (auto or CVT) XV with at least FXT power, I'd be all over it.

I would not expect Subaru to make 3 new body styles (2door, 4 door, hatch), I just dont see it, unless the STi is only available in a 2 door and the WRX is hatch and sedan.

I could see the advance touring being a little shorter like this. http://www.flickr.com/photos/9420353...ream/lightbox/

I am hoping maybe they learned something about suspension tuning from Toyota's involvement in the project and can apply this to the next WRX at least. I would expect the STI to be overly stiff because it seems like they just always are. I also agree that the BRZ interior could be better, especially when you are stepping up to a potentially 40k+ car like the STI. One of the reasons the BRZ appealed to me is that it had lots of goodies you usually only get in the STI, like the alcantara seats, 6 speed manual, red contrast stitching everywhere, etc. but for much less money. I would guess that not all of these things will make it into the next WRX, so that they can differentiate the STI model. So I think the WRX will most likely have a cheaper interior than the BRZ, and the STI will hopefully carry over the nice parts and improve the cheap parts.
Good points I agree with a lot of what you have to say. TBH, Subaru would have to royally mess up the WRX/STI for me to move on to another brand. I'm committed on that basis alone.

Hmm, I looked at ur pic a dozen times or more and I just can't buy that sort of shortening; but an advanced tourer ish WRX/STI is something that I would like to see.

Cherry Hill, NJ March 20, 2013- Subaru of America, Inc. today announced the brand's first-ever production hybrid vehicle, the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid, will debut at the 2013 New York International Auto Show at the Jacob K. Javits Center. Based on the popular XV Crosstrek crossover, the new XV Crosstrek Hybrid model uses a Subaru engineered Hybrid system and Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

In addition to the new XV Crosstrek Hybrid, Subaru will also reveal an all-new performance concept car.

Hopefully, this concept is close to the real thing. If it is, I'll wait with my purchase till it comes out next year.

i think its the opposite. regular subaru's are normally under dampened (especially in the rear) and with soft springs which is why they bounce around all over the road.

BRZ is pretty stiff. i tried to push the car up and down at the car show and it didn't move, vs the average subaru that would.

I like the long suspension travel of my old WRX on rough roads, but not the body roll in turns. There's the challenge; keeping the first and fixing the second.

Given the past few years' concepts - Impreza, XV, BRZ STI or whatever - I'm thinking it will be pretty close. But they can get a little exaggerated around the edges - Impreza real vs. concept for example.

That's a nice chop... an "extended cab" style 4-dr wagon would be cool.

It's kinda strange though the phrase that they're using "NEW PERFORMANCE CONCEPT CAR."

They'll call it a concept just in case everyone hates it, that way they can say later that it was just a styling exercise. If everyone loves it, it'll probably make production (in uglified form).

I have a feeling that they are going to do the same thing as the brz concept. Make it really agressive as a concept, then tone it down for the final production. If not, Im just going to put a new motor in my bug eye.

It might be an allusion to the next WRX/STI being "separate" from the regular impreza line. They can call it a "new car" but we all know it'll be a tweaked impreza as usual. Hell Subaru only has 1 chassis they just nip/tuck for each model, As long as it works i don't really care (But I want it to stay an Impreza WRX, not pull a GTR and drop the lineage).

We know it's something related to the WRX. The question is what exactly. New model? Production ready "Concept"? Trolling?

That sounds about right... I just thought that this is just another smoke and mirror show to add hype to another generation of WRX.

Well its not just Subaru that plays that game a lot of companies does it, Subaru is just more obvious when they do it; but you're right and I don't care as well.

That's well known, we're never going to see the WRX, or STI referenced to as a trim line of the Impreza, it's going to be its own model.

If they're saying the name WRX is going away? I doubt it.
