Post Track day is on. Details here.

Subaru Track Day at Thunderhill Raceway
www.thunderhill.com

Open to 30 Cars, SUBARU ONLY!

$210 per person.

Thursday September 28, 2000.
Actual track time:
9-12
1-4:30(5 if we get lucky)

This means 3x10 car Groups:
6x20 minute sessions per group plus a spare half hour we can all use at the beginning for testing and slow track intros, or end of the day sprints.

Provided by Thunderhill:
the 3-mile track,
flaggers,
control person,
auto practice insurance,
ambulance,
lunch package,
day long drinks,
some tents for shade,
tow,
radios,
emergency response,
registration,
release forms,
wrist bands,
driver's orientation meeting,
flag training.

I know a Thursday will be tough, but the date is far enough away (September) to take that day off work NOW! Having the track day on a Friday is triple the cost, over 18k!!

I know most of us are concerned about car damage, the ground rules are going to be very strict to prevent car damage and silly nonsense. (Don’t fear speed freaks, at least one group will run every session “Open/Full passing.”)

There will be a group photo taken by an experienced large format photographer who is an old friend of mine (8x10 camera). Reprints will be available at just above cost.

Payment is due in full ASAP. I am personally covering several thousand dollars of the deposit on my credit card since Thunderhill will not accept multiple payments from participating individuals, only a lump sum from me. Please use PayPal.com for safe money transfer. My email address for PayPal usage is: [email protected]

If sponsorship from anywhere comes on line between now and the track day, cash will be returned equally to paying attendees.

A full packet of track info, schedule etc will be mailed to each participant.

I just got off the phone with the CEO of Thunderhill. He is excited to have us. Our challenge is to pull off our track day as professionally as the BMW/Audi/Porsche etc guys do. I’ll be looking to the attending members of this board to help make it awesome.

Please post comments and questions here. If we don’t get enough Subarus (which would be crap IMHO) I will ask others to join us.

This is real guys and gals. I’m hoping this will be the pre-eminent Subaru Event on the west coast this year. I just wish folks all over the country could make it.

Cheers

Angus

Thumbs up

Hmmm... Almost sounds like North vs. South 2 the North's revenge. I will see what may be possible since I might be out of the military or might not.
[edit] Almost forgot we ought to get the sponsors in on this one again like SPO, SPD, ASR, ISR (see a trend???) and Kartboy for prizes and such to really make it fun afterall we still have the trophy right Tom.

Question

When is ASAP? The date is kind of far away right now, and I don't want to go to a track until I have at least an upgraded suspension (sometime this year)...

When is the cut off date for letting you know?

Oh man oh man oh BOY! Yeah, count me in like a crazy elephant.

Are you posting this outside of the Bay Area forum? With the date that far away maybe we can get others here too....

What's the scoop on instructors? I'm definitely interested, but haven't had any track time since going kart racing in spain a good 15 years ago

I'm going to do my best to line up instructors with AWD experience. I'm an instructor at Thunderhill in July and will see who I can rustle up from the Audi club to help. Perhaps Joel or Shiv might be interested?

For those without recent, or any track experience, refining your basic line and speeding that line up should be more than enough to accomplish in one day. Ride alongs by more experienced drivers will help.

With such a small group (with similar rides)the info and learning exchange should be high enough to help.

How do we get sponsors?

I know folks set up some for the N v S meet.

I hope we can get at least that many for this event.

cheers,

Angus

Yeah, that's about right.

Post

3 of 3 times I intended to go big-track racing and decided not to at the last minute, somebody I knew flipped their car over.

So, you folks better get me to come so I won't curse this one!!

What are the insurance details? What is "Auto practice insurance" provided by Thunderhill? Will most insurance companies cover any damage since this is not a competition event? Where to get more info on policies like this?

Cheers,
Joe

I will get the official word on T'hills policy...I don't want to mis speak on something this sensitive.

Many insurance companies will cover driving school events. Some won't.

You will have to sign a waiver to drive.

Hello,

This is far enough away in the future that you should really hit up all the aftermarket shops. Someone should prepare a pseudo professional letter to politely ask for sponsorship from all the shops, including Rallispec, Primitive, Cobb Tuning, etc. Sponsorship can include help in defreying the costs of the event, or, as is more likely with the smaller tuning shops, offers to participants for parts at a nice discount. I.E., they show up and offer their wares to participants for cheap. Many smaller shops can't really afford to donate money, but can do that. Plus that helps build hype and gets more people to show up.

Since you listed "Driver's Orientation Meeting" as one of the included features, is this their "don't be a frick-up" message or is this the more useful "late apex / follow the cones" speech? And for that matter, will they set up apex, turn in, and drive-out marker cones? If not, can several of us get out there a couple hours early and set up such cones? They can be very useful for first-timers. You set a series of three cones at the turn-in point, one at the appropriate apex, and three where the car should be hitting the outside of the track.

Another thought... Instead of calling this "Subaru Track Day" can we call it "Subaru Track School Event" or something of the sort? Calling it a school often scares away the more experienced drivers since they don't want to deal with instruction and the sort. However, since it's just our small community, we could still call it a school, which is good for insurance purposes (very few companies will ding you for taking a school) - though note, some states have changed their laws and California may follow suit - HPDEs may soon not qualify as schools. That won't happen for a couple years at the earliest, though. We all know that this school will not be heavy-handed schooling, so the experienced folks will still want to show up.

Of course, to call it a school, we need someone to "teach" between sessions. That takes at least one person qualified to teach - and I don't mean some schmuck who can drive well - I mean someone who can actually and effectively impart knowledge to others That person would not have time to drive, though, except maybe during the last session.

Just some thoughts.

As for instructing - Shiv has instructed at T-hill before. Don't ask me to instruct though As good as I think I am, I currently have 3 days experience under the belt. By September, I should have 3 more events under the belt. But that doesn't make me an expert! Though I'm very good at pointing out the errors in peoples' ways, so I'd be happy to sit with any beginers who want constructive critism, just not as an instructor.

Also, in your calculation of the number of people - instructors are usually paid by getting to go to the event for free. So every instructor gets in free and adds one to the tally.

If the people interested in the event are of many different levels of skill but weighed heavier towards the less experienced side, you might want to split the skill levels up and make the 3rd group a "passing on the straights" group instead of an open passing group. If there are enough people qualified for open passing then keep it that way. I just find it hard to believe that there are 10 people here who should be passing in the corners when most track events end up having 2 or 3 scoobies at the most.

Anyway, cool deal. I'll see what I can do about getting us some minor press coverage from one of the import mags (SCC doesn't seem to cover such small events) - even if it means I'll have to share my car with a writer-guy

Angus, if you need some help around event time, let me know. Unless some major case comes up, I should have no problem coming up on Wednesday night to Davis and then getting to the track as early as you need on thursday.

BTW, with such a small, friendly group, this would be an excellent opportunity to bring out the significant others to show them what the whole car craze is about.

thanks for all the feedback. i'll incorporate it all into this effort. joel, i'll definitely need some help, but hey, thats the community part...

i hear the feedback stressing a friendly, safe and most importantly educational event.

again, i will do my best to solicit instructors between now and then, anyone can help with this, especially if they know someone who knows AWD.

given some car club experience, most "first day on any track" drivers can be taught by someone with good track experience or race time. the basics are plenty and results can be much quicker times without excessive speed just by hitting that line.

i wonder, is that starting group 10 cars? then group 1 could be instructed by some of the clubs more advanced drivers. however, teaching a fast line and at the limit handling is the province of truly educated folks, who can quickly correct mistakes from the "british" seat

I think the group 3 may be akin to a NASA 4?

Again, the beauty of this is, with a group of ten cars over 3 miles, you can release 1 every 5-8 seconds and folks can run free and safely no problem.

i hope we can pull this off. i really love motorports and driving. i think a single marque trackday is such a great thing to look forward to.

That's great of you to put in the deposit. How do you want payment? I'd hate to see folks flake and you get stuck with a hefty bill. Let us know or personally e-mail us.

Thanks.
