what if I got a flat while on 215/45/17?
I recently put snow tire (stock size) on the OEM wheels on the RS...so when summer comes, I will be buying Rota with 215/45/17 ES100...
since 215/45/17 is roughly 1.5% smaller (in the case of ES100), what if I get a flat? I am not stupid enough to put the spare on the rears but would there be any bad effect if I put it on the front? car is 2000 RS what do people who run 215/45/17 in the summer usually do???

Hope I don't get a flat!
1.5% won't be that bad of a difference for a short period of time. it's not like you're going to be driving like that for the rest of the year or anything. Think of it as incentive to get your tire replaced. I'm in a sticker spot. I have Subaru 4-pots up front and I don't know if my spare doughnut fits over them! If I get a flat in the front, I may have to do 2 wheel changes - one to remove a good tire in the back and put the spare there, and then the 2nd change to put the "good one" back up front. We'll see - I'll test my doughnut spare when I swap my winter wheels back to summers. LaterZ! Darren!! |

Actually, I think you would be in BETTER condition than most.
Spare tires are smaller than STOCK sized tires (yes...even in our cars, they are smaller, which is why they put a 50 mile limit on them)...so you should be pretty damn safe with a spare for a day or 2. |

btw, for those with aftermarket wheels, make sure you
carry the factory lugs with you in your trunk. some of those aftermarket lugs are too small to hold the donut. |

I know the spare is narrower (135/70/16) than the stock 205/55/16 but I dont know if the rolling circumference is close...I dont have the size calculator with me right now
So it seems like I would be fine putting the donut on the front then. And the suggestion of keeping facotry lugs in the car is a good idea |

Between a stock tire and the spare donut that sized the differences are: Height (diameter) is 1.44" Rollout (circumfrence) is 4.5" At 60MPH, the donut is only traveling at 57mph. Personally, that is why they put a 50 mile limit on our cars. |

Thanx for those of you who mentioned the factory lugs. I just swapped out for aftermarket and did not even think about the spare. I think I'll go throw 5 of the stock lugs in the car right now before I forget. While I'm at it I also need to kick myself in the a$$ for driving around with dead weight I couldnt even use.
Someone tell me I'm not the only one who forgot about this. |

I wouldn't worry about it too much. At the very worst, you can let a little air out of your spare and drive extra slow. Looking at the spare, I somewhat doubt that it has the exact same rolling radius as even the stock 205/55R16. Plus remember that in the end, it is the wheel speed that matters (with respect to the differential) and that is a function of a lot of things, not just static radius.
I carry a full size 205/55R16 as a spare and I run it with only 28psi to match my 215/45R17. |

Unless the extra psi actually stretches the outside of the tire significantly, I'm at a loss as to why it should matter. Right? Somebody back me up on this.... |

Which begs the question, how FAR have people actually driven on the doughnut? Wouldn't it be funny if you wanted to go super "light" and ran 4 doughnuts instead of regular tires and wheels? LaterZ! Darren!! |

Back in one of the late 1980's-era One Laps, there was a car that did it on mini-spares all around. In answering concerns about the spares' safety, they mentioned that high pressures were what they were using to help them last. |

And Darren, there's no worry about the tread wearing out in only 50 miles. I've driven for days at a time on a spare before with no problems. I just installed mine today ( ) and yeah, it doesn't have the full tread depth of a "real" tire, but it's way more than enough to last 50 miles. Pat Olsen '97 Legacy 2.5GT sedan |
