Talking tires tires tires

I'll cut right to the chase, no bad attempts at being funny!

17x7 rims. Need to know of all tire sizes that would not only fit without rub, but also leave some room for possible lowering later on... Then I need suggestions for tires. Something capable in all weather (including some snow) and reasonable on my wallet.

Thanks all.

Ty

ps-what number indicates tread wear? what is good?

Treadwear # = higher = harder tire = slower wear = longer life, supposedly, young grasshopper.

nick- Gee, thanks. The thing is, I have searched both of those sites top to bottom. That is why I have come here with my questions

deepbeep- Thanks. I was wondering because I have been looking at the Pirelli 7000SS which has a 300+ rating but people were saying it have bad tread life... but meh, whatever. Thanks again.

Okay, so I have pretty much given up on the performance all-seasons. Mainly looking for some decent performance(grippy, somewhat quiet) tires, around $100 or less(give or take), that can handle light snow(possibly not any depending on the winter) and wear well. I've gotten plenty of listed tires on both tirerack and discount tire. I just need to know what is good/decent and what to stay away from. I know I am asking a lot but I am lost. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Try 215/45/17 or 205/50/17 for closest to stock diameter (no speedo or odometer error to speak of) and no rubbing reports. Some use 215/40/17 but that will throw your speedo off a little and such a low profile can give a harsh ride. Tires are more expensive in that size too.

As far as models, check out Dunlop SP5000's, great price, great all-season performance and admirable track qualities. Do a search in this forum and there's a very long thread on them. Too, the Bridgestone RE730 is very popular and reasonably priced.

Good luck!

1000% Kuhmo Ecsta Supra 712 205 45 17.

The Section Width will! fit.
The Load Capacity is right
And the diameter of the tire itself will lower your car about .5" from stock

Great tire for 17X7 rims

I'm about to order myself a set because I'm rubbing with 215 45 17s on +47 offsett wheels. Oh yeah make sure that with the Legacy if your buying 17X7 they have to be at least +50 offset. I'm buying new wheels too. End of this month. I'll post some pictures and let eveeryone know how they fit and perform.

MY99 2.5GT- Do you have winter tires/wheels also? Or are you confident with the Kuhmos for year-round use? Do you get any snow in MD? What about tread wear? They have something like a 160 or 260(I can't remember) rating.

Anything to add, anyone?

Based on my own research, the Dulop SP 5000 would probably be a very good choice based on the fact you want an all season tire. The Bridgestone RE730 would not be a good all season choice.

Sorry, I didn't read your question close enough.

No I wouldn't recommend the Kuhmos for winter driving. Especially if the area you live gets a lot of ice and snow.

I would recommend 17X7 +50 wheels with Kuhmo 205 45 17 for spring, summer, and fall driving.

For winter, buy a set of black steel 15" wheels from tirerack ($38 each) and get a set of 195 60 15 Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50. These were the highest rated ice and snow tire that tirerack tested and the section width and diameter will fit a lowered or stock height RS or Legacy. They are $70 each which makes them not the most expensive. If you want to keep your stock 16" wheels for winter your well priced options are the Blizzak MZ-02(205 60 16) at $84 a pop or the interesting other the Michelin XM+S 330 at $63(205 50 16). Personally I would go with the Michelin. The 205 60 Blizzack is a great tire but fitment isn't that great. The blizzack that fits perfect is way over $100.

Realistically your not going to get good street or race performance out of a set of all-season tires that you will use all year round. Ask the guys that try to auto-cross on the stock bridgestones. They improve their times significantly by simpley switching to a set of Kuhmos with smaller sidewalls.

With the winter tires you have tires that you will be using for a specific application during a specific time.

In the long run this choice will be cheaper and more satisfying. You will get the summertime competition performance and rain traction you want and get the snow traction of a studless winter specific tire. Good Luck.

UMMM.. NO! I have them and well even with a light dusting of snow. They Suck as far as traction goes. Your better off running two sets of rims and tires bud. You can't truely ge the best of both worlds these days. If your wanting something else I know the RE71's are decent in snow, but still they aren't great in the dry, and I don't know if they make them anymore.

One of the better all-season tires i have driven is the Toyo FZ4. It isn;t quite as good as a real summer tire, but they are quiet and you can drive in occasional snow with them. I know of several people that are auto-x;ing on the FZ4 and like it.

But it is really better to get two sets of tires. One for summer and one for winter. Winter setups are cheap too. I just ordered my new tires today, Summer only's Pirelli P-Zero's. These should be sticky enough for a couple track days and auto-x's.. But will be very bad in the snow/cold days.

Thumbs up

Thanks to all that responded. I think I might just go with the Kuhmo 712 and then if it snows(light dusting if anything) I'll either park it or take LOTS of time. Does the wet/dry performance apply to slush or is that an "all-season" application? Would 215/50/17 be a bad choice as far as sizing is concerned? Because that is ony size of the Dunlop 5000SP that would be close to fitting my wheel(17x7). Am I wrong?

Ty

Eric G.- Who sells the Toyo FZ4s? I'm interested if the price isn't too steep.

Your section width "might" be OK with size 215 50 17 but the diameter would be freaking huge. Go for Kuhmos 205 45 17 gaurenteed fit on 17X7 +50. Should I say it again??

Cool

the fz4's are actually pretty good in the rain. They were designed to be a good all around tire. Not the best snow tire, not the best high g's tire. But good overall and versitle. Les Schwabb sells them along with many local tire delaers. They might not stock them, but you should be able to ge them. You can always get some from mike at spd tuning, or maybe alfabill at Maestro Subaru.

SubieKid: I believe Les Schwab sells the Toyo FZ4. Just don't get it installed there.

I've been told the Toyo FZ4s are a ticket to hydroplane city if you live anywhere that it rains. The T1's on the otherhand are supposedly a great tire, but way more expensive.
