The motor has about 45,000 miles. Its been taken care of. What does the test do exactly?

Tells the health of the motor internally... You should talk to a tuner btw.

You should be talking to a tuner, NOT the internet. You don't just turn up boost on Subarus without knowing engine management, whether your motor is good, what turbo you have, knoweldge and use of air fuel ratio equipement, etc.

It should be able to handle 18 psi at least for long enough to break something. How do you plan on increasing the boost? If you are going the MBC route, at least find out what your A/F ratios look like at 15 psi. Increase it by 0.5 psi increments at a time. Then report back when you've blown a piston.

The reason why everyone is giving you a hard time is because it's nearly impossible to say whether it can handle it or not, given the age of the engine. Also keep in mind that JDM engines are made to run on higher octane fuel than we run here. Do you have any way to monitor A/F ratios, knock, and EGT?

No I dont. What would be a good but lower cost way to do so?

if the wastegate actuator is the reason your gonna be going to 18 psi then either buy something that can monitor data, or turbosmart just came out with an internal wastegate for subaru's that has different springs so you could just put in the 15psi spring. there's probably many other brands that offer wastegates that do the same thing sorry if giving you info. is being an a$$ then you shouldn't have asked a question.

Since it's JDM, and pre-1996, I'm not sure any OBD II readers are going to work on it, so you probably need to install hard-wired gauges to read that information.
