Have a Nice Day? Ortega Highway

Whoa...thats all I gotta say about that road. I went there tonite and boy its a hairy one. I went halfway through and it got real foggy so I turned around. Wouldn't mind going through it during the day tho..real scenic! You can probably get some real good drifts through that thing for all your drifters out there...I recommend it at least once. Or twice. Heheh..

Not sure if you saw this. It is very sad. Just be careful, it seems like a pretty dangerous road.

A dangerous road... reminds of Deal's Gap on this coast. 318 turns in 11 miles. They even sell t-shirts saying I survived Deal's Gap.

The first time I went up there I arrived after dark. I wound up rejetting my motorcycle in the hotel room and when I was done I wanted to ride. Most people thought I was insane. They told me I would die riding on the road in the dark.

I cranked up my FZR400, pulled onto the road and drove off into the dark twisties. I never came close to exceeding my limits. Never came close to dumping it. I had an enjoyable ride. I came back, and lo and behold, one of the bikes I trailered up would be going back in pieces. The guy dumped it about two miles down the road.

On Sunday it rained. Everybody pulled into the hotel parking lot and parked their motorcycles. My friend and I decided to go for a ride. No sweat, no problems.

We had a fun, safe, exciting ride. At times we would slide the bikes a bit, spin up the rear tire, but at all times we drove with a large margin of safety.

We saw many motorcycles go home damaged. Most of these people were actually slower than my friend and I. The road was not dangerous, the drivers were.

A road is just a road. Its the drive that exceeds the limits of his abilities, those of his vehicle, or those of their tires and the available amount of traction. It could even be another driver in another vehicle, but it isn't the road. If you leave the road there and nobody travels on it, it will never harm anyone.

I've seen some bad roads... but not a dangerous one.

Regards,

Tim K.

Yea, I heard about the guy with the Si. My respects go out to him and his family. But I just went up there for an enjoyable ride. I didn't take it past the posted speed limit most of the drive and I had a blast. Living in the city, I've never seen a road sign that had the swiggly tail on it! It was pretty cool. I saw a bunch of mustangs up there blasting through it. The scary thing about that is that they were going in the opposite direction I was and its a two way road!

Hey Tim K., I totally agree with you about what you said. "Dangerous" was not the proper word. I should have said be cautious of all around you, and know your limits. Like what is posted above, and I am sure you guys on motorcycles know this first hand, "watch out for the people that do not see you".
