Default Wheel Bearing Grease

Looking for any recommendations on what grease to run in the wheel bearings. I've been using the stock grease, and replacing the bearings twice a year, however have been wondering if it's worth repacking them.

thanks

Duncan

I have heard good things about Redline grease.

I use the Neo HP800 high temp wheelbearing grease, seems to stay in the bearings longer than the stock stuff. Rated to 800*F. Soak out the stock grease with mineral spirits and repack by hand. A tub costs about $30 and is good for at least 10 bearings, possibly more. Messy but a good idea if you get high brake temps and heavy loads from sticky tires.

The Neo CV grease is a good idea as well.

What you need is the 6GunRacing kit to covert to the 05 front bearings.

I use Amsoil Series 2000 racing grease. I also used to pack a spare set of knuckles when I ran a 5x100 hub.

When you say 'stock grease', do you mean the little dabs that come in a new set?

I also used to have to replace my front wheel bearings about that often in my wrx, about every 3 or 4 track days. I switched to Neo HP800 and it made a HUGE difference. I think I had to replace them like once more since I switched to the new grease. I really recommend it, and yea replacing and re greasing them is a huge pain, so its definitely worth it.

What parts should I looks for if I want to have some "spare" wheels bearing setup? Just knuckles and hub?

I'm assuming I'd need to do an alignment after installing new ones right?

I use the ART front bearings which last longer than OEM. They look to be packed with the red Redline bearing grease. I go through a set of front hubs/bearings each season.

I used to eat bearings like mad (and crack rotors) until I switched to Stoptechs - now I replace the bearings usually once a year, just as insurance. I carry a spare set of spindles with me as well.

but they only make em for Miatas.

I should have been more specific but I think that if Redline grease is good enough for ART hub/bearings then it would probably work well for STI bearings too.

Yea just a spare set of knuckles and hubs, and that should be it. You shouldnt NEED a spare set as long as you replace the bearing as soon as you feel it is loose. If you wait too long to replace it you risk damaging the inner hub, which is easy to do actually. And by switching to the Neo grease you will be replacing the bearing much less often and negate the need to have a spare set.

Lol, why mention it then?

Go with the Neo grease.

I use RX7 bearings and they're great. Never had a problem. But they don't fit a Subaru, so you're SOL.

Yes, just a knuckle and hub. I went to a pick and pull junkyard and got a set for $30. They came in very handy at the next track day. One of my friends lunched his right wheel bearing and I gave him one. Then I had a ball joint go bad on the left side and had to swap the whole knuckle since I couldn't separate the ball joint from the knuckle.

I bought a spare set recently. They'd been sitting outside for awhile, so I need to disassemble them, knock the rust off, paint and then reassemble. After that I'll just store them in the trailer until they're needed.

When you repack the bearing, do you take out the plastic retainer and remove the inner races, or can you just pack the bearing as a unit. I've soaked them in mineral spirits to remove the factory grease.

thanks

I pull them apart and clean them up thoroughly. I use a screwdriver and my fingers (wear gloves) to really clean everything out well. There is a lot of grease that doesn't come out unless you do that. Not sure how the two different greases would interact. Some don't like each other and turn sticky. Better to be safe than sorry, the two halves go back together pretty easily. You also need to repack them separately or there just won't be enough grease up in where it needs to be. I'm sure there is a bearing packing process somewhere online, doesn't need to be subaru specific, a wheel bearing is a wheel bearing.

so redline or neo - any opinions on which is better? I really like the idea of the spare knuckles. I need to look into that - pick and pull here I come lol

With the neo grease I used to push the grease in from one side until all the other grease was out. The oem grease is white while the neo is blue so its easy to tell one from the other. Its not necessary to clean off all the old grease first.
