I just purchased my first subaru- a 1990 Loyale from the original owner with 49 000 miles on it. When the car warms up and idles, their is a ticking sound. it seems to go away when i drive. Any ideas of what this might be- the car was owned by an 83 year old lady and only putted around her neighborhood- i am wondering if an oil change and a high rpm highway drive might help.

It might.... its known as the tick of death or TOD. Often resealing the oil pump will fix it if a good long drive does not.

If it was timing it would tick all the time, warm or cold.
Run a bottle of Seafoam or Marvel Mystery Oil thru it, that might free up the sticky lifters. |

I work on subarus I you look at the timing covers and pop out the rubber plugs on both sides loosen the too blots on the tensioners through the holes that the plugs were in and it'll take up the slack from the timing belts an that will resolve the problem if it is your timing. If that does not work its a lifter.
