Default First hand accounts of SPT exhaust?

Hello,

I have a 2012 SPW WRX 5 door base model. I've started with some small cosmetic mods and this spring will probably get an AP, CAI, and Perrin maps to match. Now I have a phobia of aftermarket exhausts because of the horrible drone I had from the exhaust I threw on my previous car. It was pretty brutal on the highway where I couldn't comfortably have a conversation and long drives in the city gave me a headache. That being said I'd like to add some subtle rumble to my WRX. I'm not looking for a mean loud after market exhaust for a stage 2 or anything. Just some sexy boxer sound. I've been looking at the SPT exhaust. I can avoid warranty problems and it seems to fit my needs. I'm just looking for honest accounts of people who have it or have experienced it on the hatchback - Is there any drone? There is a difference between added noise and highway drone.

Lemme know what you think!

Travis

Travis,

Before any of the gents here tell you to search, allow me to provide you with something more substantial.

I've heard the SPT, Magnaflow, and the Nameless axelback with magnaflow muffler.

My personal opinion, in terms of drone, rumble quality, and finish

Drone (highest to lowest)
SPT (low)
Magnaflow (almost none)
Nameless (none)

Rumble quality (at idle, highest to lowest)
Magnaflow
Nameless
SPT

Finish (best finish, welds, etc)
SPT
Nameless
Magnaflow (pretty bad once you start looking for details, but if a person is simply standing behind the car, they're fine).

I have the SPT exhaust on my 2013 hatch, on a cold start the rumble is throaty but not too loud. I can have conversations in the car with no problems while driving.

I love the sound from my SPT CBE, but it is a little loud for the people in the back seat.

Fit & finish are excellent...I just wish the tips were longer.

I'm actually in the same boat as you, and I had the MF CBE on my otherwise stock car. It was too loud in the back seat for my kids (3 and 2 years old, particularly my son who has small hearing issues he's growing out of), so I ended up selling it and going back to stock for a bit. I am planning on installing a DP and seeing if that alters the sound enough for my taste.

I don't know exactly what people mean by 'drone', but the MF was a bit noisey in the car while driving (sounded AWESOME at idle though), and there was definitely some reverberation in the hatchback from the exhaust around 2500-3000 rpm (that's pretty much all my highway RPMs). It seemed to get quieter above that. 'Too loud' is relative, but it was noiser than the MF I had on my MS3 for sure.

I am basically looking at the Cobb and the SPT at this point (or just a custom system from the DP back). From what I can tell they are the quietest of the standard exhaust group.

Just a friendly reminder that the 5-door and the sedan are two totally different animals in terms of sound from an exhaust - so be careful on what videos you listen to.

^This. Completely ignore any advice/reviews that pertain to the sedan.

I have heard the Magnaflow for the hatch and thought it was loud and droned. I have owned the SPT exhaust and I didn't think the drone was that bad. It is one of the least droning options for that hatch, but it does make a bit more noise than stock. The only one I've found that has less drone is the GReddy SP Elite.

I appreciate the advice guys. I've looked around on this forum and others but just wanted first hand advice from people who have had it on similar my model of car

and Xluben: I've heard the maddad whisper is next to silent until you give it a bootful, but can't seem to find it for the 2011+ WRX. I'm okay with a bit of noise, just not down with the drone. Didn't you have the invidia Q300? Sounded amazing, but I can only assume wasn't too friendly on the ears after time. But I'll investigate the GReddy as well. Thanks!

All 08+ STI hatch exhausts fit the 2011+ WRX hatch. I have not heard the MadDad. The Q300 drones a lot.

I have to throw in a reminder that all new exhausts will have some sort of break in period.

My Q300 was horrible at first, but has broken in very nicely. I thought I was going to have to get rid of it at first because the drone was terrible, but I no longer get any drone after several thousand miles of driving, and am now quite happy with it. (Other people have verified this, I swear I didn't go deaf)

I have a coworker with the maddad, and it's definitely a good option too. Sounds mostly stock at idle/low rpms but has some bite to it at higher rpms.

I had the maddad whisper on my 08 hatch and then on my 12. Absolutely loved the exhaust no drone what so ever. Quiet when you wanted it to be but really opened up at higher rpm's. unfortunately was in an accident about a month ago and decided to try something different and went with the q300. Huge change I love the way the q300 sounds but the drone is crazy compared to any other exhausts I have heard on the hatch. To be honest still getting used to how it sounds and have had to turn up the radio a bit more than I used to but can still manage to talk to other passengers. If I had my choice I would go with the whisper or the street series again but kinda been addicted to the rumble the q300 makes.

Where did you order the maddad whisper from? They don't have it for the 12 on the website

Love my Cobb CBE. It is loud enough to bring out the natural rumble of the motor. Nice and quite on the highway but still turns heads when I get on it.

Best money spent so far.

08+ STI or 11+ WRX Hatch are the same.

You're going to get a million different opinions because this subject is so subjective. That being said, I had the SPT on my '11 hatch and had the exact same goals as you have. In my own opinion, the volume of the SPT was nice and on the subtle side, BUT, the exhaust drones fiercely with the windows up. The connection from the midpipe to the muffler also hangs extremely low and looks tacky. These two factors made me ditch it. I found the drone to be far too much and gave me headaches...and I simply don't get headaches.

I moved on to the TurboXS GT series CBE. It achieves very similar volume levels as the SPT WITHOUT the drone. It also hangs nice and tight, with a nice esthetic finish. Check this out for a plethora of information.

I also want to add that I've heard the Nameless system with the magnaflow muffler option is on the quite side. I have never heard it in person, though. Good luck.

I think my SPT is really loud, but I'm stage 2, so it's different from your situation . I'm thinking of putting my stock system back on.

its nice to see the general idea is that LOUD isn't good. Haha guess there aren't too many ricers here. I'm thinking I'll go with the Nameless axle back with the 5" muffler. I haven't heard it in person but from videos it seems to have a nice throaty rumble and everyone is saying no drone. Seems like my best option and I LOVE the sound. Thanks for all the input guys.

Loud on a daily driver is just stupid

I don't think you can go wrong with the nameless 5" muffler. If I didn't find my Cobb locally that would have been my choice.

Worst case is you don't like it you just sell or trade it. Keep the stock system around in case it isn't for you.

If you are still apprehensive about dropping money I strongly suggest checking out the compilation Decipher posted. I literally read every post and watched every video in there before I narrowed it down to 3 options.

This. I think the Cobb is especially quiet. Not as quiet as the SPT. The Cobb opens up a little bit more when you get on it. Both are high quality parts that should outlast the vehicle itself.

Literally, my winter tires are louder than the Cobb around town.

Since you're going stage 1 I don't think it's matter what exhaust you're going to use anymore because flashing you ECU could risk void your warranty. I have only heard the SPT exhaust in person and I really like the sound of it. My friend is going to get a Q300 for his 09 hatch soon so may be if you still haven't gotten an exhaust yet I will let you know how it sounds haha. I ordered my car with the SPT exhaust after listening to it in person.

Fair warning, the Ver2 of the Q300 exhaust is reported to have headache inducing amount of drone on the hatches.

you wont have any problems with any catback when it comes to warranty issues. i have the spt and i like it a lot since it's not loud nor is it quiet. also, i dont have any droning issues either.
