Glad Dr Chaos registered and checked in. Definitely an impressive build, particularly doing it all in your own garage. Keep us posted on how the project progresses. Even with the non-showy details are interesting, as they can often give others ideas on how to overcome some problem they've encountered.

Default update on "whatisit?"

First I want to apologise for not staying in touch here and for not posting more pics as so many of you have asked for. There has been quite a bit of progress on the car project but most of it is not picture worthy stuff. As we are using Subaru steering column switch controls and are grafting that into the BMW and into our custom ignition and fuel system, it's gotten quite interesting. We will be taking pics today of the wiring mess before we get to assemble it. We hope to post onto this site these pics but I need to reduce their size first as our pic quality is a bit more than this site allows.

Hey guys, thanks for all the great names you are creating, some are very cool and some we've gotten a good chuckle out of!

We have the fuel injection and ignition system in a tester car ('96 Subaru Legacy) and have been doing adjustments to get the balance between the ignition curve and the fuel curve. It's very close. We had it running slightly rich showing .85v from the O2 sensor and still got 25 mpg. I just re-set it so it's averaging .65v and retarded the timing 4 degrees and should get better economy. The best part is I lost no power in doing this, but I did gain a steadier pull above 5500 rpm. Next to do some porting since I believe the restriction is in air flow. Hard to show pics of this kind of work. All hands, screwdrivers and pliers - not very exciting. (unless you're the one doing it)

If any of you have questions on basic problems and wiring of all the steering column control switches, I have been forced by this project to have gotten to know it fairly well.

Thanks for your compliments and possible names. Great stuff.

I dont understand why you wanted the subaru drive train and chassis, but its still way cool. Subscribed

I always like the question (why did I do it?) It really is quite simple. The BMW is a timeless classic, light weight and exempt from many controls. The Subaru for it's smooth power, low center of gravity and the abundance of parts to be had. Doing this the car will weigh about 100 lbs more than the BMW and 800 to 900 lbs less than the Subaru. The hp with the change to mechanical injection and stand alone ignition on a stock 91 2.2 Subaru will about 150 hp, a number that most BMW 2002 owners work hard to get. I plan on having near or over 200 hp with no turbo or nos when set up the way I want it. No computer or the expensive parts that go with it. Work on it with only the basic hand tools in a near empty engine bay. The donor Subaru was $400. The wheel base is 5" longer and 7" wider. It is quite plane what this will do. Add AWD to the package and most of your questions will be answered.

My favorite reason for doing it is, I want one. The second favorite reason is, it is one of a kind. The next is it will kick butt and be fun to drive.
I have built cars in the past that would kick this car's butt, but they could not get the mpg of this car. The test car that is running the new injection and ignition system when set In the high performance tune got 25 mpg, in econo tune it got 37 mpg and I have something new coming that will give me both with no change of tuning.

There is so much fun to this and only so much page to type on. Oh well, I like building them more than talking about them any way.

Keith, I would like to hear more about the project you are doing that is the opposite to what I am doing. Sound cool.

I got some wiring done and some more tuning on the test car and set up a custom steering wheel to fit on the Subaru steering shaft.

I will work on getting some pics on here soon.

I took a quik look at an s52. First I would guess you mean the BMW not the helicopter. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Nice car. Will the motor fit under the hood of a Subaru? It looks taller. A hood scoop would look great and solve this problem. If you mean the helicopter, It won't fit. HEHEHEHEHEHE

Still a good idea. I for one think you should go for it.

Hilborn injection? LOL kidding. A Kugelfischer injection setup on this thing would be soooooo cool! Anxious to hear details!

Oh goody, the more interesting questions start. I am so tempted just to tell you what it is but that would be misleading because it's been highly modified for this project and it is also temporary as I plan on going to a port injected liquid propane. But as I am impressed with the temp set up I will let you know. Bosch K Jetronics. Going on a test drive today after further modifications to see if I can break 32 mpg with no power loss. Of course, the mpgs won't happen if I can't keep my foot out of it. The consistant, smooth power band from this old of a system is surprising. The body has been reshaped, the pressures have been modified which has changed the airflow and fuel curve. One test last night showed crusing numbers on the O2 sensor as low as .45v and under heavy load as high as .9v. I did not expect this result from an old system like this. Very exciting.

At this point I am running a fully mechancial distributor with a total advance of 42 degrees. I wonder what will happen if I reduce the 42 degrees to 36 and add 6 degrees of vacuum advance? Anybody know?

Have fun, fellow car buffs!

I would like to post pics for all of you but the format of this site does not match the instructions for pic posting.

I have the size reduced, so that is not the problem.

Where is the manage attachments link?

A lot of cute smiles but pics posting looks like it needs to go through an other web system and not direct from my computer. Sorry, if this is my only option because I don't want to post my pics on some general public server.

I hope there is another way, I like this group.

If not, some time in the near future I will start my own web site for pics and info and just add links to it from here.

Help

Thanks

Yeah, you'll have to upload them to a site like photobucket.com or imageshack.com and then link them from there.

But i believe when you upload pictures you can set them to private so no one else can use them.

Those sites i listed are free aswell

Thanks Keith

I will have a think on this. The private option may help. I am sharing this with fellow car buffs not just anyone that wants to be entertained. I also have video of most of the major build and will like to find something other than Youtube for the same reason. I am new tho this chat stuff and have been told there are a lot of trolls that are time wasters.

This site is cool and the people are all about cars.

Thanks

Doc, if you want easy access to my photobucket acct, you're welcome to it-I've reset the privacy option, hopefully everything still works.

I will be testing the 96 subaru with the modifications, it is so close to being a good economy and good power combo. I am shocked that it is working so well. I over adjusted the set up on the fuel injection and got o2 sensor readings that I did not think possible. Light driving .2v and load .86v. A bit too much swing. I want .45v and .8v. I now know how to get this and it will take a 14 mm wrench and a screw driver and 10 mins to reset. Then a test drive to get a good soldering gun for the wiring.

I get the o2 readings with a $10 volt meter.

Erik has a pic of the wiring to show the mess I will be working on. I hope to have pics here when I have time to set it up.

This is fun

that body hoist scares me. How heavy is the body shell and to what was it anchored? i.e. that is some ceiling.

It sounds like you're just pulling voltage readings off the stock narrow band O2 sensor? If so, that's not particularly trustworthy. As the name implies, a narrow band O2 sensor is only accurate within a very narrow voltage band. As Greg Banish says in his book Engine Management Advanced Tuning:
Quote:

It is a common error for inexperienced tuners to reply upon the factory narrow band HEGO when tuning for fuel monitoring under load. I have seen dozens of broken engines directly resulting from what the tuner thought was a rich condition when in fact it was merely richer than the accuracy range of the sensor.
I imagine the level of risk isn't terribly high in this case, since we're talking about a rather mildly tuned 2.2L engine and not some high compression fire-breathing monster. But the point remains that the narrow band HEGO is not an accurate tuning tool and could lead to trouble.
