I've been counting the seconds. After being on the Pick6 podium for a couple of years straight, I turned into Force India last year. So, as I list my picks, I advise most other Pick6-ers to run in the other direction.

Actually, I think this year will be very unpredictable until the drivers figure out how not to run over each others' front wings. They look impossibly wide to me and when all those fat noses go into a first turn somewhere, I think it will be carbon fiber city.

Anyway, here's what an old man thinks:

Massa. Focused
Kubica. Don't know why. I like him
Button. I think the Brawns are fast now. We'll see a bit later in the season.
Raikkonen. Massa is focused. Kimi is thinking about getting ****faced.
Rubino. From the outhouse to the points. He's a great guy too.
Vettel. Probably should have him higher.
Rosberg. At 7 and 8 it's a crapshoot, could also be a Toyota, Maclaren. I like Nico.
Alonso. Could flog a Tata Nano into the points.

Also be aware: On The Gas offers Crispy Creme Doughnuts for podium finishers at the end of the year. With a purse this great, the competition this year will be fierce.

Have the DVR all set.

Each year the OZ GP seems to be a crap shoot. There are always driver mistakes, vehicle failures, and surprises during this race.

The new regs have really overturned the apple cart, judging from the testing times. I revised my picks 3 times, before deciding the testing times may be a worthwhile indicator, (which is traditionally unwise). So my picks are relatively radical:
  1. Barrichello - Choosing between the two BGP drivers is difficult because their results have been fairly even. I'll give a slight edge to Rubens, as he seems to grab slightly more points in the same car. Also, watching his performance in Massa's big Brazilian karting event last fall, where he out drove Schumacher, and won the event, was fairly impressive.
  2. Button - If the BGP has the same pace as in testing, then I'm in good shape here. Just hard to choose between the two drivers!
  3. Kubica - A win gives a driver an edge of confidence.
  4. Heidfeld - Quick Nick would grab more points over his younger team-mate, but he lost the handle on his car mid-season last year. If he's on it, he's very good, and under-rated.
  5. Trulli - Toyota showed the pace in testing. Jarno remains the master qualifier, so I'm guessing one or two beemers have to work their way around Jarno during the race.
  6. Massa - Ferrari was fourth fastest in testing pace on long runs. But testing is not racing. Felipe will be interesting... wonder if he will be faster this year than his team-mate.
  7. Raikkonen - If Kimi is fighting for the win, he can be magic. But if Ferrari's testing pace is a good indicator, he won't be fighting for a win. Very unpredictable, performance-wise, when not on point.
  8. Glock - Timo is inconsistent, sometimes makes mistakes. Shown flashes of very good speed, so is unpredictable.

Brawn car 'absurdly superior' - Williams
24 March 2009

Sir Frank Williams believes that the new Brawn GP team may find themselves with a huge advantage at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix this weekend. The Ex-Honda outfit underwent a management buyout earlier this month as it took the name of Team Principal Ross Brawn, who started his F1 career with Williams in 1978.

"Ross started to work for us as a junior in the little wind tunnel; he just made his own career and pulled himself up by his bootstraps, and now has great knowledge from his time at Ferrari," Williams told The Daily Express. "It is no accident that their new car is absurdly superior - they are making the rest of us look like amateurs. In Australia they will disappear on the basis of what we have seen in testing. I just hope we can be up there, too."

Sir Frank's positive words for the Brawn team are in stark contrast to those used to describe his own team's progress since its last World Championship victory; holders of nine Constructors' titles, the team has not celebrated major success since 1997. "It is embarrassing," Williams admitted. "We have not done well but there is no point in moaning and groaning, we just keep it to ourselves and try to do better. But we are very good, loyal, honest citizens of Formula One and a good racing team who deserve to be there."

I am going to be very very tired come Friday morning. It is absolute lunacy to go to bed early, wake up in the middle of the night, watch TV for an hour, then go back to bed for a few more hours...all to watch PRACTICE....but I'm going to do it, sanity be damned.

Lightbulb Deja Vu & Red Bull threatens Brawn GP protest

Quote:
Red Bull threatens Brawn GP protest

By Michele Lostia and Jonathan Noble Tuesday, March 24th 2009, 13:59 GMT

Brawn's innovative diffuser, 2009, JerezRed Bull Racing has said it will protest rival Brawn GP over the design of its diffuser if the team's current design passes scrutineering at Melbourne on Thursday.

Questions over the design of the diffusers have surfaced since Williams and Toyota appeared to exploit the wording of the regulations to allow themselves a taller design than the rules originally intended.

But the debate has stepped up a gear after Brawn GP's new car, which features a unique twin-deck concept, has dominated pre-season testing times.

With the matter still not settled, and talk of a possible protest having surfaced in recent days, Red Bull's advisor Helmut Marko has now confirmed his team will object to the design if it is unchanged and given the all-clear by scrutineers.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport about the design of the Brawn diffuser, Marko said: "It's illegal: we'll make a protest on Thursday if the component isn't modified to conform to the regulations, because that diffuser guarantees a five-tenths-advantage per lap. Seven teams are certain it's illegal."
The article continues, and covers a little bit of the previous history. Though the headline is dramatic, since a similar rule was interpreted the same way by the teams last season, and the FIA has provided some blessing of this interpretation, it is likely that the Red Bull would lose. And if Red Bull's protest is successful, I imagine the penalty would not be harsh (a la Honda F1 being tossed, and suspended from the championship for the fuel tank inside a fuel tank), but more along the lines of hand slaps, (a dramatically large fine, which is later rescinded, but points are not touched).

However it plays out, it does have dramatic implications for the race pace. If Williams, Toyota, and BGP's interpreation is approved, then everyone will be sporting various double decker diffusers in a few weeks. Which change the competitive dynamics of the field, (for instance Ferrari & McLaren may suddenly be fighting at the front end of the field for wins and podiums again, like last year).

Does this story bring anyone else a little deja vu all over again feeling? Remember 2007 Australia, where there was the weird question about splitter floor of the Ferrari flexing at speed?

I thought that was very strange, and I corresponded with Bira & Scarborough over at Autosport.com on that subject, as well as Adam Cooper @ SpeedTV.com. I asked about the sources for the stories (it was senior folks at McLaren, I forget the names, or titles at the moment), and I asked what it was the splitter was doing, and how it affected the aero (going up or down, creating down force, or reducing drag), and interestingly received conflicting technical answers (one up, one down ).

But of course the real drama behind the whole Ferrari splitter story at Australia was that it was, in fact, poorly played part of McLaren's espionage of Ferrari via McLaren's chief designer Mike Coughlan's relationship with Ferrari's Nigel Stepney.

Ferrari was so perplexed by McLaren's actions, (most teams had flexible splitters), that they wondered about how McLaren would be so acquainted with Ferrari's designs. Ferrari must have figured something out pretty quickly, because by June, Ferrari had some sort of criminal charges brought against him, which were flimsy. Then they fired Stepney. By July 3rd, the whole story began to break out into the day light, when it became known that Coughlan's wife took the Ferrari designs to the local FedEx/Kinko's to make a copy or two.

I guess the point is that little request for clarification by McLaren regarding how splitter floors are tested had lasting, and large implications. Last month, the charges of corporate espionage against Coughlan, and senior McLaren engineers Paddy Lowe, Jonathan Neale and Rob Taylor were dropped after a 'nolo contendere' (no contest) agreement was reached, and the McLaren (or ex...) boys received large 150,000 euro fines, or larger.

Also last month, the FIA lifted any, and all restrictions against Stepney, and Coughlan.
Quote:
Mosely said:

"In the end they were just very minor players. If the full story came out, they are two minor players and there are people who are not minor players. But the full story will probably never come out."
I hope he is wrong, and that the full story does come out, but I'm not holding my breath.

Anyway, a little deja vu bringing back a few rusty memories...

Changing to the bigger diffuser won't be the work of the moment, especially for Red Bull and their pull-rod rear suspension and Newey coke-bottle rear end. You're right though, if the protest is denied by Barcelona everyone who can will be running the Brawn-style diffuser, much to the dismay of the following car I'm sure.

I was always garbage with pick6, fantasy I did pretty well until the end cuz I ran out of good drivers.

I just want to enjoy the racing! Im sure this year, with all thats going on with F1, I won't need any outside entertainment to keep me going

I don't see the "double decker" section of the Brawn rear diffuser. . .

However, WTH is this on the back of the McLaren diffuser?

Ferg - good points, as always.

I had read Sam Michael's prediction that other teams will have similar diffusers soon. He mentions in this article from Feb 26 that he has noticed two teams have components on their cars "perfectly positioned to have it on their cars for Melbourne."

So, as you point out, if Newey cars can't easily expand their diffuser, that is 2 out of 10 teams.

There are now 3 teams with expanded diffusers, and Sam Michael claims he spots two other teams who could change easily, so that could be quickly half of the field.

Of the five remaining teams, the Newey cars would be difficult, so that leaves 3 other teams, which are unknowns.

It will be interesting to watch this drama unfold, though I wish it didn't exist.
