Does anyone here work at a consulting firm, or know someone who does?
Specifically places like McKinsey, Bain, Booz, BCG, as well as Monitor Group, Deloitte & Touche, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Accenture, and Ernst & Young.
I would really, really like to talk to someone that works at these types of companies as a consultant. Preferably face-to-face or over the phone. I'm at the point in my academic career where I want to decide what specific type of work I want to do with my academic background, and I'm really considering this line of work. Just to show that I'm not a doofus with overly high aspirations, I'm working on my PhD in applied math, specifically in operations research. It is not exactly the type of strategic consulting many of the companies above do, but I think I would be good at it. Why am I appealing to the Suby board? First, this type of work is not what I'm doing with my advisor, so I can't really ask him. Second, since I am in the math department, I don't have access to any of the Business school resources. Really, they kicked me out of a job fair. I'm working on that though. I'm not going to lie, I am interested in a summer internship position, but my main focus is finding out exactly what the work is like (really). There are three lines of work I'm looking at, strategic consulting as above, technical consulting (like Rand Corp and the like), and Wallstreet. They all have their pros and cons. When I get my PhD I am going to throw myself completely into one of these things and I want to be sure I'm doing the right one. By talking to you or your friend, I want to figure out if strategic consulting is the career I want to aim for. All that was just to say I'm serious about this. I know places like these are competitive to get into and don't like wasting their time. If you've got a lead, please give me a PM so I can send you my "serious" email address. Thanks guys!

McKinsey billable rates...yikes!
Not presently in the industry. Have a lot of good connects, though, just not a lot of demand for my field (Web Development) right now. |

I used to work for Grant Thornton doing business consulting and auditing. Its repetitive and mind numbing; same feedback I got from all my friends who do/did public accounting.
McKinsey and Booz are different since their primary focus isn't accounting. Getting a PhD in applied mathematics and going to public accounting is a complete waste IMO. Complete and utter waste; just my 0.02 |

No offense, but I agree with the Smith school's policy of keeping non-business school majors out of the career fair.
There's a general career fair that all majors are allowed to attend. |

While I understand the rational, it's no help to me. The general career fair features far fewer companies that I am interested in. Almost none were prepared for graduate candidates. I'm far more interested in the business school fairs.

You should have an alumni database that you can use to find contacts who currently work at strategy consulting firms and would be willing to discuss their experiences. Try asking your career office or alumni career services if they can help you find someone to talk to. B-schools encourage students to setup informational interviews in addition to formal recruiting events and processes, so most alumni will be happy to spend 30 minutes on the phone with you.

My pops graduated from Smith with an MBA then a PhD in OR. He's a fed at FERC doing energy regulation work. If you're interested in talking to him I bet he'd share his opinions on the consultants he works with and their value. |
