Not the brightest idea in the world...to say the least. You NEED your MAF to be working.

Two questions.

What Intake are you using?

What part number are you using for the MAF?

Forget trying to bypass your MAF. That will cost at least $2000.

You can out it into limp-home mode by unplugging the sensor. This will give you a conservative fuel map and rpms limited to 3400. Not great but you will be able to drive your car to the dealership to buy your new MAF.

No convert to MAP you'd need either a TEC-II or an ECU and MAP sensor off of a MY00. And probably a few more bits but I dunno.

I don't see why you couldn't. Since the rev limit is now at about 3500 just be careful not to hit it too much since you'll be dumping unburnt fuel into your cats.

In "limp-home mode" it doesn't like a cold car. So I'd warm the engine up before heading out, otherwise it'll stall a few times. Don't use the A/C in traffic, only at crusing speed. It can't hold idle with it on.

Good luck, sorry to hear about your MAF.

Question

Sc00by25RS,
Did you go to the Subie meet this weekend at Race Rock? Someone blew their MAF sensor for the third time over the weekend and I was wondering if it was you.

I almost have to ask this question since the subject is there and someone mentioned in a way but doesn't the 99 and 00 model's share the same ecu pin connectors? If so all you may need to do is "wire chase" with the shop manual and see if the pins have changed anywhere and if so swap them and then replace the MAF with a MAP from a 2000. I think that is the only big engine sensor difference between the 2 years. Heck I remember Kevin Thomas using a 98 RS DOHC ecu on his 1997 SOHC 2.2L and the only problem IIRC was the difference between the cam sensors of the 98 DOHC and the 97 SOHC (of course he is now back to the stock 97 ecu). I would think that may be a viable option if you continuously blow mafs but it might not me a cheap one. Just throwing the idea out there for the 99rs members.

scooby25rs,

where you at the meet? when did your MAS break? I drove 200 miles home on the hiway with a disconnected mas..

here are some tips... run around 75MPH, and not faster...because you will most likely hit the 3500 limit and sputter like crazy!

it is the most unnerving sound/feeling. good luck.

You could convert your maf system to a map speed density system with the HKS VPC(Vein Pressure Converter) for under $1000 but good luck in wiring it up and also tuning it.
