haha, correction there, thats my higher speeds on the flat areas. most of the curvy roads I don't get much more than 55-60 in the summer so I expect less than that for winter.

Any suggestions on particular tires. I'm looking at the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3, Blizzak LM-60, Pirelli Winter 240

D_Smitt, do you care about noise?

If you care not about noise, wet or dry but ice and snow then you may want studded tires. But if you are in Downingtown, PA then it probably is overkill.

Studless winter tires may be your best choic. Blizzaks WS series are usually leading the way in this category.

225/40R18 seems to be odd size for winter tires. Tirerack has 6 winter tires in this size: 1 Run Flat, 2 studless and 3 performance winter: Pilot Alpin PA3 is the best winter tire in the dry, Blizzak LM60 is not available in Europe so the only test is from CR and they are in the middle, Sotto Zero Serie II is solid mid pack in Euro tests but low in CR.

Pick your poison.

Looking at getting Blizzaks in either 205/65/16 or 205/60/16 but i'm kinda torn. I plan on running 1" spacers because I could really use the clearance this winter (pizza delivery boy on narrow, windy, and beat-up roads). could someone chime in on these sizes? will the geometry be off really bad with the 65's? rubbing issues?

Also, my one concern with the blizzaks are that I do a fair amount of highway driving as well as hit up the local mountain many times throughout the winter. I have heard blizzaks can get sketchy at highway speeds. any other tire suggestions based on my needs? Maybe the goodyear ultra grip ice WRT (cant find any reviews on them)?
205/65R16 are awful tall, im not positive, but they will probably rub. if you are worried about high speed handling, but still want a great snow, i would get these in a 205/60R16.

I agree with the Michelin and Pirelli recommendations krzyss gave, as your priority seems to be for dry and wet traction in cold temperatures. Another tire to consider is the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D.

Another performance winter that received high praise from CR, and one we don't see mentioned very frequently here, is the Hankook Winter i*Cept Evo. But I am not aware of any other tests of this tire. FWIW, it came in 2nd overall in the 2010 CR tests. Personally, I would be hesitant to buy a set of new tires on the recommendation of CR alone.

I saw that too, I don't live too far from you so we have the same crappy weather....I can't wait either. Are the x-ice's alot like General's or should I go with Winterforce??

x-ice is a top tier winter tire. the generals are a older design with not as good of a compound, but the tread pattern is great and its a good performer. winterforce suck imo. there are much better "budget" choices.

I've only run blizzak WS60s and original xice (not the xice xi2) so cant offer an opinion on winterforce. Xices were good on our old celica so i hope the xi2s will be good on my WRX. I'm sure they'll be better than the stocks!

Other than being round and black, the General Altimax Arctic and the Hankook iPike W409 are not "pretty much the same tire". Different tread design is the most visible difference. And no doubt they differ in internal construction and in rubber formulation.

I don't care about the noise, but I can't use studded tires because of state law. I was looking at blizzaks yesterday and other tires in that category. I heard of good reviews on those tires, but wanted to see if there is any other suggestion. Thanks for the advice.

of the choices given, yes. the ws70 and extremewintercontact would also be great choices. cant go wrong with any of the 3.

Yea, it does seem to be an odd winter size but I have to sets of wheels right now and that's what fits em.

Besides if there are only a few to pick from then it makes it easier to narrow down.

I need to look into the 3d I haven't seem them offered in my size yet.

If you build your own Tire Rack winter package, it has 16 steelies as an option.

16x6.5 steelies
Pirelli 210 Sottozero Tires
215/55R16

What Tirerack indicated will work, will most likely work. I'd trust them to get it right. However, not all 16X6.5" steelies are created equal. The shape and offset play a role in them fitting as well. So you'll need to do a test fit to be sure.

my winter wheels/tires showed up today! 205/60R16 ws70's on steelies. went 205/60R16 because they are only .3" taller than stock and $21 a piece cheaper than 215/55R16's.

Hi Guys!

Have a 2011 subaru WRX 5-door. Quick question - I live in San Francisco but I plan on making a weekend trips to tahoe during snowboarding season (probably a 4 hour drive there and a 4 hour drive back). I typically go to kirkwood.

I'm going to get some new wheels and tires. I was thinking that I wouldn't want to change them every time i go up to tahoe, and probably wouldn't need dedicated snow tires since I don't live up there, but I wanted to get your guys suggestions. Is there a good all weather tire that you would recommend, or should I get a dedicate snow tire and drive 3.5 hours on freeway before I actually get to the snow?

Anyone else in a similar situation? How did they handle this?

conti dws is great in the snow for an all season. i would go with those if you only want 1 set of tires. if you can have 2 sets i would get dunlop 3d's. they wear like iron and handle as good as most performance all seasons.

I'm thinking about getting the WS70s. I read in a review somewhere (can't recall or find the thread) that the blizzaks the reviewer had (cant remember the model) were "squirelley above 70". probably an older model with a lower rating. the WS70s are a T-rating (118 mph).
