Soa told me any dealer can refuse any customer service. I was really shocked at soa's response to the matter. That's when I decided that soa suck. If you look way back, at first I was all happy and said nothing but good about soa. Even defended soa when another new owner was having problems.
But the according to soa, the dealer has the right to refuse service to anyone they want. Soa kept saying they'd send a rep to get involved, and kept pressing to me to go to Bill Bryan. But in the end soa told me all the dealer has to do is sell the car. I think it works out better for soa to keep blowing smoke up everyones butts and let everyone keep racking up the miles. I caught this issue early on, and it was only due to my paying more attention than an average consumer. Still waiting on that rep- but I never went to Bill Bryan without a friend or family member. So it was hard to lie to me and give me a runaround with witnesses.

I checked it cold first thing this morning. Its at least a half inch below the full mark. When I filled it it was just a little above the mark.
So- at exactly a thousand miles (well actually 1006) I've burned over a half a quart. If consumption continues to get worse relative to mileage, then I should be on track for warranty repair/replacement by 20-30k. Hopefully |

I checked mine last night with the Amsoil Signature, 1800 miles now, might be down 1/16", which is significantly better than I was seeing with xl. I might go with a 30wt next summer though, time will tell. |

I'm a huge fan of Amsoil, but at my rate of consumption, I'll likely buy the cheapest 0w20 available. I'm not going to keep playing oil games, and a modern economy car shouldn't need Amsoil or any kind of foofy fairy dust to not burn oil. Will it burn less with the Amsoil? Maybe. But I just don't like pouring ten-dollar quarts of oil to be burned away. It essentially has sort of a "total loss" oil system as it is, so I see no reason to run anything expensive or exotic.

I did the math a while back on maximum allowed consumption, and it was scary.
When you have to top off so much, it makes more sense just to replace the filter from time to time. We definitely shouldn't have to even be having such discussions, what with these "high tech" "modern" cars. In 2012, we don't seem to have any better manufacturing tolerances than in the mid 70's. I wonder if the epa has updated their oil consumption allowances for automakers since the days of Pintos and Vega's... |

I found this fun read when searching for oil consumption allowances for chevy vega's. It does have some elements that seem eerily familiar.

Here's a generic article on cars and oil consumption. The author states that more than a quart between changes IS excessive.

No one is questioning the fact that having an oil consumption problem sucks and threshold for consumption seems a bit high, but it appears that it is an industry standard. If I were you I would just continue to document your problem with SOA. Keep an email chain of all the events.

I dont believe anything on our vehicle was a collaboration by toyota. We dont have direct injection. So none of the parts that made the conversion are in it. Aluminum blocks are used by everyone so i wouldnt call it cutting edge now. For the record my mothers first car was a 72 vega. She loved the thing but she isnt much of a car person and sold it 6 years later i believe |

Well... The oil pressure light was "dim" on my impreza for 2 weeks in September (usually afternoon, not in morning, temperature is 20c). The service maintenance done in August and the oil level is above full mark.
I've tried to turn off the engine but it doesn't go away.... Did some research and check the repair manual.... I assume its related to the wiring/electric/grounding issue or something related to the oil pressure sensing unit Luckily it no longer comes up now. I will bring this up again if I see it next time to the technician. Just a record for anyone who may have the oil pressure light (dim) in the future. |

waiting on some crush washers to come in. Going back to w20. In 1200 miles, I've burned about 3/4 of a quart. I'll measure it when I change it.

I've used Kendall quite a bit over the years. So, yeah, that's probably something I'd get. Whatever non-M1 0w20 is cheapest.

Still think I'm gonna try M1 0W30 for my next fill in about 1400 miles seeing as I don't have enough amsoil 0W-20 left for another oil change because of all the top offs.
I'll see in almost exactly 200 miles if the cold temps have had any affect on my consumption rate. Last edited by jr0bb5; 11-19-2012 at 08:22 PM. |

I was/am very surprised that with cooler (60F) temps and 5w30 synthetic my consumption was just as bad as the 0w20 if not worse.
