Default Financial gurus, talk me out of it...

I've had the urge lately to go into a dealer and trade up to an STi. I just paid off my 06 wrx and I know it's a terrible decision (one of which I'd lose thousands of dollars) but the STi is calling! I'd settle for stage 2 but I can't bring myself to void my warranty.

Edmunds True Cost to Own says
2006 STI ownership for 5 years is $60,852 or approximately $0.81/mile

well I think there's a good compromise here....

Put up with the WRX (as if that's something to put up with) for the 36000 miles of your warranty, meanwhile save up some money and then do the stage 2...

I'll take a sleeper WRX over an STI anyday

I hear you on the STi..I got my WRX in '02 and the STi coming here sounded like a dream or a rumor. Anyway, it gets here and I've wanted one real bad ever since, but I'll never part with my WRX. STi will be down the road in a few years after the 2.0 is where I want it. Just think of how much better it will be in 3 or 4 years.

Obviously money isn't a problem if you paid off a 2006 WRX in less than a year. It sounds to me like you can afford to lose thousands, so go ahead and get the STI.

If you JUST paid off your 06 WRX I'm sure you won't have a problem paying for a STi

Hmmm. Any way you look at this you're going to lose money on the WRX for the first year's depreciation and also on a new STi as soon as you drive it off the lot. So really the first question is do you want that STi so badly it is worth it?
From the money point of view... Since you're in Washington you should look at the tax benefit of a trade. However at best you're going to get high trade-in for the WRX and not much of a discount on the STi if its new. You'll be paying tax on the difference.
If you can find an STi that's slightly used, like you're WRX, then you won't eat all the depreciation of a new car and still get the tax savings on a trade.
The next alternative is to sell the WRX yourself. I would do the research on a trade first to see how much I would have to sell the WRX for to make it worth my while financially and to cover the hassle.
Personally when my wife and I are looking to buy a car we always look for someone selling a car like yours - low mileage, lots of warranty, and already depreciated for the first year.
Listing it on a free site for $1k or so above KBB high retail wouldn't hurt you.
In my recent car shopping experience I found that the 2000-02 RS and WRX were selling for way above book in W. Wa. Dunno about the newer one's cuz my stepson did not have that kind of bank.
Hope this helps. Have fun!
