So even though I now have the 02 wrx short throw shifter assembly I still can't connect it to my 96 transmission because where the rod comes out of the transmission is the opposite of what it needs to be? Do I have to also get the piece that is riveted (or whatever) to the transmission? Instead of the "x" connecting linkage, I have a double clevis or something? I removed my entire shifter assembly from the car, both rods, and where it connects to the transmission is totally opposite. The bushings are pretty much non existent. Is there a way to get the joint that is connected to the transmission rod off? Drilling? Punch?

Hey fellas, I just installed the Kartboy SS with front and rear bushings. It feels soooo amazing. Like I imagine a 911 feels. I have a couple of install tips though.

On my 06 there is no need to remove the whole center console, the shifter housing comes off in a seperate piece. Makes that part really easy.

If you do the bushings, here are a few things that scoobymods did not mention, nor have I seen here.

To get the front bushing out, just push the whole thing out using the stud the thing was attached to.

The rear bushing is a pain in the ass no matter what you do, the exhaust and driveline are in the way. I found that if I left the shifter unhooked from the linkage, there was a lot more play and made the whole process much easler. The rear bushing is impossible to install with the shift lever attached to the linkage. Leave it un-attached and the linkage will more around under the car a whole lot more.

Would anyone recommend upgrading the bushings on an 07 6spd? I have the tranny in my garage waiting to go into a SVX and was wondering if this is something worth doing while the tranny is out and the linkage is easily accessible.

Well, that would make it the easy time to upgrade those. You can do it now or when the tranny is in the car, and you don't have as much room to work.

Oh, and a 6MT SVX would rock! You gotta tell us how it turns out.

It has already been done and it does rock. My svx will be the 4th or 5th one. My question was whethere this was an upgrade or simply a replacement for when stock bushings wear out.

Personally, I think they're an upgrade. Hopefully others who have bought them will chime in so you don't think I'm biased.

Thanks again for the advice, TIC. Mine still shifts firmly with the new bushings and linkage. My friend has an 06 with upgraded shifter components and always seems amazed at how firm mine feels.

After scanning thru the thread I have a question that didn't seem to be addressed.
How much improved feel comes from the upgraded bushings and how much comes from the short throw shifter components?

My reason for asking is that I would like to upgrade the bushings for better feel but keep the stock shifter and linkage.
Am I doing a lot of work for very little improvement or does just changing out the bushings give a substantial improvement in the feel?

there's a metric TON of folks out there who have done just the bushings, and kept the stock or factory short shift lever. They LOVE it. The bushings will make a major improvement in feel.

I swapped out the front and rear shifter mount bushings when i did my wrx conversion into my 96 wagon. Compared to how the shift feel felt before the conversion it was a night and day difference. Driving my car, and then my dads one year newer GF is totally different in feel...
Front/rear shifter mount bushings on stock shifter is great!
I just finished the swap about 8 weeks ago, and put in a kartboy short shifter last week... i think the bushings made a much bigger difference than the short shifter. I almost liked the feel of the stock shifter with the bushings more...

The full set of bushings - front stay, rear stay, linkage bushings, and pivot bushings make for the most slop free setup that we feel can be made with the subaru assembly.

just got a 07 jdm 6mt in my 03 wrx. could use a set of bushings. shifter seems a bit to sloppy.

i have the factory short shifter on my 04 wrx, would it make any difference to get the perrin performance short shifter with polyurethane bushings? or would this just be a waste of $100? they're on sale right now, so i figured it would be a good time to upgrade if i have to.

question to Turn in Concepts.... You said

"Ok, I got that. How do I tell which one I have?

Here's the breakdown:
- If you have a 1997-2001 Impreza you will need the narrow version
- If you have a 2002+ Impreza you will need the wide version (except in below)
- If you have a 2002+ Impreza with the FACTORY optional short shifter you will need the narrow version"

Does this mean if I have a 99 rs 2.5 I can use a stock wrx short shifter for an upgrade? Im just looking for a good deal, my rs tranny blew up and Im putting in another one so I would like to do a little upgrading while its out.

Throw wise they are all the same. its the center pivot width that is different. the GC8 RS and the optional ones are the same width. thats why you would need to order the RS style if you have the option in the WRX. hope that didnt confuse you more.
