Notice how no one will question whether Porsche's design philosophy is flawed, but Tesla's Model S catches fire twice and zomgelectriccarsaredangerous!!1

At least it didn't happen during Chris Harris's review.

Maybe it SHOULD have happened during his review. Right after the obligatory, "That sound. Whoohoohooo listen to that engine!"
Poof! |

Speaking of which, didn't something similar happen on Fifth Gear or something? I thought that the Caparo caught on fire once with the other guy (not Tiff Nedell).

While it sucks to the bottom line, VW made a lot of margin on models such as these particular Porsche's and trim levels, it probably financially wouldn't put them in the red either.
I'd also say, it goes a long way to address repeat buyers too |

The big margin at Porsche is on the Cayenne, not the 911s.

That doesn't mean that the 911 lineup doesn't turn nice profits for them. Unless you really think that red seatbelts really cost $500 more while HIDs really cost $2000.

Seriously, find another carmaker with as many options. BTW, LED lights on a 6-series cost $1,900. |

Again, it doesn't mean that they aren't turning profits on it. They're certainly not pricing it to lose money or break even on it. And tons and tons of custom orders, whether from individuals or dealerships, are coming in regardless, so it's not as if they are having to put the whole factory on pause because of one order included the heated steering wheel.
At this point, it's probably less common to find two identically equipped 911s these days anyway, given the options and customization. Frankly, it might even be more of a disruption to the production line when an order comes in for a completely base model with zero options since there are probably so few of those around, and that doesn't get them any extra money. |
