Question 16" tire size preference for rallycrossing?

Are there other conditions, besides snow, where one would prefer a 205/55 (or narrower) over a 225/50 "all-season" tire when rallycrossing?

Would (water truck induced) mud over hardpack dirt disadvantage a 225 over the 205 since the 205 might bite through a little better?

Other conditions anticipated: sand, silty flour sand, gravel over hardpack, hardpack. Not much loam or snow anticipated, but who knows?

From what I've seen on the WRC and at SCCA Pro-Rally events, the pros always run tires w/ smaller width on loose surfaces. They only run wider tires on tarmac. There must be a reason.

Thanks! I was observing the real rally tires were tending towards narrower, too.

Time to ditch my bald-cornered 225/50 Dunlop SP-5000s for some 205/55 KDWS, maybe...

this tire just plain sucks on gravel or dirt. good on clay or wet tarmac though.

Thanks!

It was pretty amazing at the transformation: During real runs (where a water truck went through, then a grader, then one car then me -- in near 100-degree heat), the slurry on the surface was basically frictionless and my tires wouldn't bite through.

However, at the end of the day there were (water truck-less and grader-less) fun runs and the tires comparitively HOOKED up on the exposed, rutted surfaces. I shoulda hung at the back of the run group and let the others sweep the mud off.

It seems like the 205s might carry a relative advantage over the 225s in the looser conditions (soft over hard and soft over soft), and maybe the KDWS over the Dunlop in the same?
