STI Short Shifter upgrade for WRX
I bought a Kartboy Short Shifter and today found with my friend that I seem to already have the STI upgraded shifter and linkage...Are we right with our guess seeing the shifter and linkage are gold instead of the plain aluminum look... and is it better then the kartboy?

If the shift lever is gold and just a thin shaft with no damper around it, then you do have the STi shifter option. It's not necessarily "better", just a factory option that includes the entire linkage versus just the lever for the Kartboy and other aftermarket short shifters. The STi setup keeps the same shifter height as the stock shifter, the Kartboy is a bit lower. There's nothing bad about the STi shifter other than the fact that it costs considerably more and is a bit more involved to install, but neither would be an issue if it's already on your car.
It is actually possible to install a Kartboy lever with the STi shifter for a further reduction in throw and the lower height. However you can't use the one that you got if it's for the standard Impreza shifter linkage because the STi linkage is different. You'd have to exchange it for the version that Kartboy makes for the older (-'01) linkage. |

I didn't see any damperes around the shifter... is there any upgrade that i would want to do to this set up? and I also bought the bushings for this car (not installed) are those different also? or are they the same with either the WRX linkage or this "upgraded" set up?

Bushings are the same for whatever shifter you have. They install into the shifter support underneath the car.
Unless you decide to change the lever there isn't much else to do with your shifter, replace the knob maybe. |

Hi
sorry i didnt get to this sooner. i was at the Rim of the World Rally all weekend The KB shifter is about15- 20% shorter than the STi option you have in there. it will also flex less than the bent wire they use on there. its all preference tho. we also have a new rear shifter bushing ( back in stock soon) that along with the front shifter bushings will give you a nice tight feel Tom |
