Default Talk me out of it - I dare you.

Well, I've finally reached the point where getting rid of my '92 Saturn SL2 is a good idea. It's at the stage where the repairs are becoming more needed, and a few big ones (i.e. clutch replacement) are on the horizon. Time to cut and run.

Since I began driving, I've been blessed with reliable, but boooooring cars. My first was an '80 Grand Prix V6 (pretty but slow). In college, I got a '80 Tercel (my first stick shift). In my first job, I got a company car, but it was the less than exciting Lumina. After that job, I had to get my own car which is where I'm at today - the ultra-sporty SL2

I've promised myself that my next car will NOT be boring - either from a design perspective or a performance one. I want something that stands out from the crowd of clones. I want something that if I need to gun it to get around some slowpoke, I can do so with authority. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not looking to drag anyone as I've just cleaned up my driving record (plus I'm 34 now). I just want that knowledge that if I need to punch it, it will give me whiplash

I do have a family, but luckily we already have a kid-runner in our new Highlander (3rd row seats!). My new car will have to haul some kids around sometimes, but it will not be our primary kidmobile. In terms of where I'm driving, I live in Richmond, Va and also live about 3 miles from my job. So my commute is a breeze. Weather-wise, we are perpetually on the snow-ice-rain line during the winter, with ice/rain more probable than anything else. Other than that the weather the other 9 months of the year is great.

So, I'm seriously looking into the WRX sports wagon (blue of course). Based on what I've told you, can you think of reasons why I should NOT get one? If so, is there still a chance to nab a 2005, or should I just wait for the 2006's to arrive?

Thanks a TON!

06 should be a considerable upgrade in performance, with 2.5 and AVCS.

Go with a Legacy GT (sedan or wagon). It is quite a car in all respects. I think you may get frustrated with the turbo lag that plagues the 2 liter engine. Not sure how you feel about the '06 design...but rumor has it that the '06 will have the 2.5 engine. Basically, get one of the vehicles that have the 2.5 liter turbo.

Well, the good thing about turbo lag is that since I've never owned a car that had turbo, I wouldn't know what I was or was not missing anyway

Bill,

I won't try to talk you out of the car because I think it's a good choice. You may want to quickly get a Saab 9-2X and take advantage of the GM mismanagement fiascos and end up with an upgraded Subaru for even less money than the base car.

You won't, however, get whiplash. My toy car is a Factory Five Cobra. 2300 pounds with just shy of 300hp. I can give a passenger whiplash, but not myself. I can leave rubber in 4 gears.

NICE, bro. I don't know what has come over me, but the last couple of months if I catch a Cobra out of the corner of my eye, I find myself wondering what they are like to drive on a daily basis.

Ahhh, the employee discount thingy I presume. Worth a look. I obviously liked the look of the SAAB too but thought it would be too pricey.

About the turbo lag - I've read it in various posts here so it's obviously an issue. But is it a show-stopper, or just an annoyance? What causes it?

The lag is caused by the 2.0 liter not having enough exhaust energy at low rpm's to spin the turbo up to full boost instantaneously. So, you have to wait a second or two for it to hit. This can be alleviated by keeping the revs up a bit but can't be eliminated. Generally, once you get out of 1st or 2nd, it isn't much of an issue. To answer your question, it's more of an annoyance. It's a turbo, it's the nature of the beast.

As for the rumor of a 2.5 liter in the 2006, it's not a rumor, it's gospel now. The 06's have a fair amount of worthwhile improvements over the 05's, not to mention the restyle. If you can wait, get the 06.

Great info - is there a corresponding price hike along with it?

My dad had an '83 Tercel with over 300,000 miles when he sold it. He didn't change the timing belt till 190,000 miles (didn't know) and sold the car with the original clutch. Simply amazing. The dealership couldn't believe it. When I saw that you had a Tercel in college this just popped in my head.

06 all the way. There's even a "base" model WRX now.... WRX TR.

(that also means more n00bies and high schoolers will be getting their hands on these, but that's a different subject for a different thread for a different day)

I bought an '05 because my salesman (who is a personal friend) told me there was no way he could give me the same deal on an '06 and that I should expect a price hike for sure, though he didn't know by how much.

If the turbo lag of the 2.0l bugs you, get a catless up-pipe and an ECU reflash and you'll be set.

BillR2-> I've driven the 2.5T (from the '04 Forester 2.5 XT) and clearly it has almost no-lag compared to the 'Rex I have right now (maybe because for the AVC, man I got to have that on my wagon). (:

-> Yeah, if I were you I'll wait for the 2006 model (aka. the B9-Rex) WRX. And forget the 9-2X, even with that GM's mumbo-jumbo hanging all over the place, for the same price, I'd get the Legacy/Outback series. (:

I went from a Saturn to my Sub. Got the OBS - I had lusted after a WRX wagon for so long, but with gas prices and my driving habits - I don't need a turbo, nor could I justify the extra money. I'll tell you though, a 5Speed OBS seems like a race car after my BOOOOORRRINNNGG AT Saturn.

I did own the Saturn for 3 years with ZERO problems, it was dependable.

If you are basing decisions heavily on price, go with the Saabaru. You get a WRX Wagon with a nicer interior, and it's included in the GM employee discount...

Now a reason from somebody that knows about Richmond. I'm not going to even try to talk you out of it just warn you. When you're parked and in your building WRX's beg people that walk by to steal them. Keep this in mind as you think about it. It's a horrible feeling to have your car stolen.

Good luck finding a 9-2x. I just was looking for my Dad to take advantage of the discount and there are virtually none left nearly country wide.

The 3 dealers I called in the Balt./Wash area havent seen any for a few weeks and say they aren't getting anymore 05's.

Again good luck, and act fast to see if there are any straglers left in your area. Super deals on those things if you can find one.

i like the wagon, i dont think your MTB will fit in the back of an eclipse. I happen to own a Blue 04 wagon and its great, no noticble performance difference between the sedan, since its exactly the same except for a couple of lbs.
