Project Mu BForce Brake Pads
With 35K miles on the car and the rotors pretty glazed and grooved from the stock pads, I decided to take an economical stab at refreshing my braking performance.
Brake mods already in place: Goodridge Stainless Steel lines ATE Super Blue fluid I bought a new set of Project Mu BForce street pads from a fellow i-clubber and set about to get my rotors turned. I borrowed a set of cryo-frozen WRX rotors and a set of Porterfield R4 race pads while my wife took my rotors to the dealership for service. $10 later, I got back a nice set of flat and fresh surfaced rotors. Since there were no bedding in instructions in the box, my buddy and I decided to give them the same routine his Porterfields got, namely several runs up to 60 and then progressively braking harder back down to 5 or 10. After a half dozen runs, we pulled over and decided to give the pads and rotors a rest. By this time, the heat had created some fade and ignited the excess anti-squeal grease. Yes, I had to bend over and blow out the flames engulfing my calipers. Well, the next day I was underwhelmed and disappointed. The pads did not seem to be biting and the system seemed a little soft. Well, over the next few days, as the surface of the rotors lost that "just turned" appearance, the pads really started to grow on me. I found that in contrast to the R4, which had incredible initial bite and a truly staggering coefficient of friction, the BForce pads had a much more streetable nature. They are extremely easy to modulate up high which makes for very smooth city driving. But dive down on the pedal and these pads really grab. Well at least as much as my pathetic RE92s allow. Very impressive. Better than stock. Summary: Project Mu BForce pads. At about $80 a set for the front, a good deal and tuned for street and city driving. No shims or wear indicators so use the ones that came with your stock pads. Compared to Porterfield R4S street pads at about $120 and Endless CC-X at $250, a bargain. BTW, those Porterfield R4 track pads were absolutely mind-boggling. For those looking to drop long green on four-pots, try a better pad first. You might save yourself some money if you don't do a lot of track days. And as befits a track pad, they squealed like stuck pigs and created a week's worth of noxious, clingy dust in one day.
