Default just got 2 new tires...quick question

I recently bent a rim and popped a tire. I got a new rim and I always thought that for subarus you need 4 new tires. The guy at mavis said that I would be fine with just 2 new ones so I put the 2 news on on the front.

I just wana know if this is true or am i gona pay the price in a little bit with my center diff.?

The tires on the rear are still in good shape.

Good shape or new shape? It really depends on that....if the tires on the back are *new* and the same diameter(yes, they will be 205.55.16 or whatever your rims take, but with the wear factored in), you should be fine....as long as they wear at the same rate.

I'd get 2 new tires, same brand, to match the ones you just got though.....

I can't say that they're *new* shape. I have had them through the winter and they looked pretty new when i bought the car in late August.

The car does seem a little off on the acceleration but isnt making any wierd noises or anything like that. I am also due for an alligment which will be done tomarrow. (I have stock 16s)

As long as they are within 1/4" of each other (I think that is what the manual says), it is ok, if not, you need to replace all 4 or shave 2 of them down.

How would I go by checking to see if they are within 1/4 of each other?

Here's a good benchmark to compare tread depths:

it's circumference.

Within 1/4-inch of tire circumference or about 2/32-inch of each other in remaining tread depth.

You should be fine, your car is old enough that there is enough "slop" in the drivetrain to run it out. I'm sure there are some, but ive never heard of any case of "problems" with the same size tires. And ive never noticed anything, but i guess safety first.

I just went through the same thing. I researched the hell out of this. You'll be fine.

Personally (I'm not poor though) the price of 2 additional tires is far less than the cost of replacing the center dif. I'll never replace just 2 tires on an AWD car. I think you should be keeping up with tire rotations too.

I looked at the tires this morning and the ones in the rear are probably like 50***37; thread left. I thought they had more...so iam probably gona get 2 new tires which sucks b/c i might as well have bought 4 badass tires instead of these all seasons i have to use again

Thanks

The problem will be worse at high speeds. Go find a nice highway, get up to your normal highway cruising speed and see if you notice the center diff. locking up.

All you have to do is read your owners manual.

I see most have already answered your question...and they're right. If there is more than 1/4inch (4/32) difference between the tires, you risk TRASHING your transfer case, which is can be pretty expensive to fix. If there's more than 1/4inch difference, just go with 4 new--no sense in risking it.
