Considering Shell is a good 20 cents more per gallon here for mid grade (87) at some stations there is almost a 30 cent different for vpower (91) I see no point in spending 373 for a gallon of gas when I can get the same thing from Valero (largest refinery capacity in the US) for cheaper....
Example: Shell down the street from the house= 378 for mid (87) Diamond Shamrock (Valero) down the street=353 for mid (87) Its all the same gas, different additives...thats all. Besides of which I ran shell for a while and noticed little to no difference that could make it worth the extra money at the pump, if you buy shell for detergents why dont you just buy fuel system cleaner ever 3k? just my 2 cents I should probably add that nothing above 91 is avail in CO due to altitude 85octane is like 87 octane everywhere else, so 87 is really like 89/90 everywhere else. RoadTrippin, are the Sinclair and Stinker stations all gone from Denver? At least many of them will have 88-octane regular and 92-octane premium (with some 90 in between) if you want it. It's gasohol, though, and some folks have a 'thing' about that.

They are still here, never bought from them though other brands (namely conoco (all the brands they own) Valero, and Shell) tend to be more plentiful.

Cheapest 91 I can find. I have never noticed a difference in power or fuel economy by using different brands, and those of you who say you do are kidding yourselves.

Quote:
from the article: .."...Complicating things, some respected brands not on the Top Tier list claim to exceed the requirements. They just don't think auto companies should tell them how to make or market their fuels. ExxonMobil, for instance, wants "a more collaborative approach," says spokeswoman Prem Nair. Auto and oil companies should "work cooperatively to determine the optimal mix of vehicle hardware and fuel standards," she says. Exxon and Mobil aren't Top Tier brands, though Nair says they surpass that standard. Ford Motor, not in the Top Tier coalition, says right on its gasoline caps, "Ford recommends BP," not a Top Tier brand. "Their fuel meets or exceeds what our vehicles require. We know their products" from collaborating on lubricant and fuel research, says Ford spokesman Said Deep. ..."... Interesting, BP owns Castrol right? |

Isn't it odd that a fuel marketer would attempt to claim than an auto manufacturer should not determine the level of cleanliness required in that manufacturer's cars? Who better to determine the requisite level of cleanliness than the manufacturer?
'Ford recommends BP.' Can you say, 'marketing money wins out over performance?' |

^Kind of like an oil organization (American Petroleum Institute) setting standards for auto manufacturers, as opposed to the auto manufacturers (ACEA-European Automobile Manufacturers' Association) setting the standards for which oil can be used.
Marketing always wins. How many posts are there here that say "Porsche uses M1, so it's good enough for me!". Sort of OT, but I think my analogy makes sense. -Dennis |

I posted an answer to this question several months ago on another forum. I'll post it here again for everyone's benefit.
Here is a current list of Top Tier Gasoline retailers: QuikTrip Chevron Conoco Phillips 76 Shell Entec Stations MFA Oil Company Kwik Trip/Kwik Star The Somerset Refinery, Inc. Chevron-Canada Aloha Petroleum Tri-Par Oil Company Shell-Canada Texaco Petro-Canada Sunoco-Canada All these companies meet the standard, but I have found that Shell uses more than double (~5X EPA) the required level of additives in their premium grade (V-power 93) of gasoline than is typically needed to achieve a Top Tier certification. I've heard that Chevron does something similar, but I don't have any good evidence of that and it's not available where I live anyway. I get Shell whenever possible. Yah, I too use shell (more out of convienence), but I'm not happy to use the gasohole tho (less energy & a food source for fuel?). Chevron & Sunoco is near non-existant here in Florida.
