Default Sealing GTSPEC Gen2. header/uppipe

I'm on gasket set #3 with them. The driver side manifold flange leaks where it bolts to the motor, and the 3-bolt uppipe flange leaks water upon a cold start, and then leaks air under boost. I just installed new gaskets last night, and the uppipe flange still leaked. Then after calling gtspec, they said put 2 gaskets in the uppipe flange, which I today in hopes that would seal it. Now I have 2 leaky gaskets at the uppipe flange and the new motor to manifold gasket leaks as well. Anybody with these have some way to get that flange sealed? I tightened them manifold to uppipe, then manifold to block, then uppipe to turbo, all 3 times.

Try Crucial Racing's new copper gaskets available through boxer4racing.com or Gruppe-S's 5 ply gaskets.

believe mine has slight leaks also, as a tad of black soot like markings is on the pipes a the junctures... but how much does this really affect the cars performance, i still spool up quick, and the leaks do seem to be ever so slight... ??? is this a big problem or minor detail?

I would try gruppe-s' gaskets, but the ones gtspec sent me are like 5-ply as well. They are really thick, which is why I don't get why it doesn't seal unless the flange is defective. I noticed i have numbers carved into the the uppipe and head flanges on the header, and the numbers were imprinted on the gasket in soot when i took it off. Mine is leaking really bad...so much that it is causing the front o2 sensor to read lean. I have had the bolts snug, properly torqued, and over tightened trying to seal it and it always leaks. Since its cold out here I can see the gas coming out my engine bay now. If you have soot at the flange it is leaking. Mine had a ton because of the water escaping through the flange.

Default Yep

i noticed a sligh dropping of water at first during install... and again, very slight amounts of soot... but the leaks on mine must be minimal at most, cause i've never seen the exhaust gases coming out, and i've been under the car while idling and i can't even detect the leak at that point... i did have prob with nuts/bolts backing out under wot at firts... i went to metal locking washers and put some serious tightening on them from a real big guy that works at my dad's shop.... sounds like your leak is more of an issue, has it always leaked like this? is there a crack between the pipe and flange maybe?

mine was serious. The bolts didnt back out and i had them tightened pretty well. I believe it sealed decently the first time I put the header on, but the leak eventually killed the gasket. The one I took out was black everywhere (not just in the middle). There is no crack on either flange, but there are numbers carved into them from gtspec or jethot....I dont know. My buddies is sealed perfectly and mine leakes everywhere.

The crucial racing gaskets sealed my uppipe up. Just remember to keep the gaskets clean before you spray on a bunch of copper gasket sealant then follow the specified torquing patterns and you should be alright.

You can't use the crucial gaskets with the gtspec header as the flanges are different bolt pattern and diameter. It has 2 heavy duty 5-ply gaskets in there now and is still leaking...both gaskets were new and clean.

Have the header surfaced/milled flat.

Before I decided to toss the darn thing I had the up-pipe welded to the header proper to cure that one, and then used Mr. Gasket Copperseal manifold gaskets. The have a one time use rating as the only downside. They sealed and I never had a problem after that. I noticed that the turbo was laggy and unreponsive before it was fixed. With the exhaust energy not being fully directed at the turbo it only makes sense.

Those headers, and the others branded differently but the same style, are garbage. I've worked on many of them at my shop and there are ALWAYS leaks on them. At every flange there is a leak, not to mention the 3 bolt uppipe makes getting to them a PITA. Put your stock manifold back on with a Perrin (or similar) uppipe and call it a day.
Cheers,
Joel
