Default Report: Camaro Z28 coming in 2011

The hints and clues to a 2011 Z28 debut continue to mount

Quote:
When General Motors' financial situation turned from serious to bankruptcy-bound, two of the first models to get pushed back or canceled were the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible and the ultra-performance Z28 variant. But now talk of the Z28's revival is bubbling out of GM.

Over the weekend a group of GM officials held a question and answer session at the Carlisle Nationals event in Pennsylvania, and the enthusiasts over at Camaro5 got new confirmation that the Camaro Z28 is in fact still on the table.

It had been pushed back until after the early 2011 debut of the Camaro Convertible, and feared to be all but canceled, but now the Z28 is back on for a spring 2011 debut shortly after the Convertible. So far the known facts parallel the previous details: more powerful than the SS, a special hood and grille treatment, Z28 badges and/or graphics and a possibly a redesigned rear clip.

Reports from earlier this year said the design of the Camaro Z28 was complete, but that the project wouldn't be going forward due to a low expected sales rate and high per-unit costs. Those earlier plans had a version of the LSA V8 found in the new Cadillac CTS-V, rated at 556hp (414kW) and good for a 0-60mph time likely under 4 seconds with a shot at a high-11-second quarter mile time.

Those would be fantastic numbers for a Camaro, and would certainly be enough to put the Camaro fimly in the lead for this round of the muscle car wars.

Unfortunately, despite the thinly veiled hints from GM personnel at events like the Carlisle Nationals, there's still no official announcement of the Z28, and so the car is still only speculative at this point.

Uggg... the last thing we need is another $50,000+, 500hp+, overweight pig of a muscle car.

Please GM, use the original Z28 as inspiration for the new one. Give us a lightweight, stripped-down model, with suspension and brake upgrades, and an aluminum small block with lightweight internals and a 7000rpm redline.

Does anybody care about muscle cars? Do they sell well? Is the Camaro goin' to save GM? In my opinion, GM is headed down the wrong path!

How are these cars selling right now? So far, I have seen 2 in person on the road. A girl I worked with just bought a V6 one in red, but I havent seen it. So that makes three that I know of. Is the production just low for these cars and dealerships only get one or two?

They do look pretty cool in real life. Waaay more eye catching than the new Challenger or Mustangs I see around. Pictures dont really do it justice.

The Camaro is selling like hotcakes right now. I've heard that sales are backed up for the next year or so. Usually that pans out to be less dramatic than that though. Still though, I'm happy the camaro is doing so well. It's a BA looking car with a long history. Who cares how "nimble" it is. That's not why I'd buy one...

How many mustangs do you see on the road compared to WRX/STI's? I see a bazillion. I've seen 10 Challengers and all of 3 08/09 STI's. Already seen 2 Camaro's.

300hp engine that gets 29 MPG highway and looks nice and priced at $22k what do you think it's going to do sit on the lots for a year...

GM will bring back the Z28, but they will pull out of the NUMMI plant where fuel efficient utilitarian vehicles (Vibe, possibly Volt) can be made at a shared cost with another automaker.

This smacks of the "Old GM"...sell something shiny and manly instead of something useful.

This. I saw a new Camaro in the weird blueish-greenish color and it looked amazing. As far as looks go, it looks just as intent on being a sports car as the Corvette does, and more-so than the Mustang, Charger, or Challenger. And the base V6 has nearly as much power as the Mustang's V8, but starts at 22k...

The current one is selling well here in San Diego. I stopped counting at 15.

I am on the boat with WhiteKnight's stripped down Z28. Lighter car, small rambunctious motor, and nimble chassis.

If they want to do a heavy insane version, just offer it as another SS choice. That way people can have their cake and eat it too.

Sell 4 versions:
V6
SS
H.O SS
Z28

Yes Egor, Yes.....This is what I have been waiting to hear! Now tell me that the Z28 will be made available in a convertible and I will have my Volt and Z28 rolling out of the dealership together.
Z28=5000 miles a year...Weekend Toy
Volt=26000 miles a year 41.2 mile one way commute during the week and I should have my employer on board to install a charging port.
Civic Hybrid will become my wifes daily driver for 170 miles per week and its paid for. 550 miles on less than 12.5 gallons is easy for this car taking over the duties of our gas guzzling Dakota. GM, you are looking better and better.

Not gonna happen. You can't just wish a car to become lighter if it wasn't designed to be lightweight from day one. At most I would like for them to possibly replace stuff like the hood and trunk with AL pieces, but you can only do so much with the platform that this car is on... it's a BIG car.

What Hazdaz said.

Plus, the engine you're describing sounds like the LS7, which is not only more expensive than the LSA, it's also less powerful.

are those volk RE030's? lol. but i've seen the current camaro in person and i think it looks amazing especially from the rear quarter panel. i think the only thing bad about this car is weight, but most cars these days are overweight anyway so whatever .

Did any of you read the article?

It says the car is "speculative" for coming in 2011.

Not for sure yet.

This car will never see the light of day while the federal government controls GM. Who are they kidding?

I'd disagree, right now the new Mustang is looking like much more of a sports car than the Camaro is. The Camaro V6 is down on torque and is nearly a second slower than the current Mustang. And that's not taking into account the new 400 hp 5.0 on tap for next year.

I'd rather have the cheaper, more powerful, more modable, and possibly more efficient LSA (hard to tell though since they've never shared an application). Plus in a car the Camaro's weight, ~80hp would make less of a difference than it does between the Corvette and Z06. LSA for the win.

To anyone who is saying this isn't a car GM should be making right now I disagree. While they do need bread and butter sedans, crossovers and trucks they also need cars that sell in any segment.

While GM needs to make money I don't want them to become another Toyota, dishwashers for the masses.
