Buying car from overseas, anyone have advice?
Let's just say I might have the chance to buy a car of my dreams, but it is located overseas (Germany). The car is built as US Spec (even got a picture of the VIN plate which states that the car meets all U.S. Federal regulations), and it's intent was to be shipped here eventually by the owner.
The car can be flown here to the east coast in 72 hours, and I assume I would just pick it up from the airport. The car is insured and all during the flight. I then get to inspect the car, and have 10 days to decide if it was just as the seller claimed (and it appears so from all the pics I have seen). I have seen pictures of the title, and am having them faxed to me ASAP. Has anyone hear ever done such a thing, or known someone who has? I am curious to know if it will be difficult to register the car, I would think it wouldn't be since the car is US legal and I would have a clean title. But, I have never done such a thing, and don't know where to turn for advice. Hopefully someone here has some input!!! Thanks, Kevin

They're flying it over? Wow I bet that cost a butt load. What kind of car is it? I'd check with the DMV to see if you can truly register it.

make sure all the paperwork is done correctly.
my father in law brought over 4 cars once and the importer failed to register something. one of the cars was in impound for about 6 months. sucks because we had to insure it. to insure it we needed plates and tabs....... not fun. when we brought our volvo to the virgin islands, it lost all of its knobs, dials, and switches in puetorico...... not fun. |
