Yes it is very unsafe to drive a beater that isn't designed to handle high speeds, but with knowing the car is built to handle well sometimes leads people to take everything up to the next level. aka I just got my brand new STI lets take this corner at a buck 10. very sad to hear about, and the punishment of being in a jail cell alone with the thought of him killing his friends will eat him alive.
by the way I am new here, live up in Rochester NY.

The US driving tests are way too lax. You pass a simple written test and you're allowed to operate a vehicle? That's absurd to me. Kids can easily take the car out without their parents knowledge and simply get a ticket for driving without a license (if they get caught). Certain countries in Europe have such strict and extensive driving tests that people need to take them 3 or 4 times to pass. I dont think I've ever heard of anyone failing a drivers test here; even if you mess up parallel parking they let you redo it.

That kid had a serious lapse of judgement. I know gtrs and supras that won't even rip it 110 unless it's a straightaway, completely dry and they're alone. They'd never do anything like that with passengers.

My first car was a POS truck and I did a lot of stupid **** in that thing, but it also taught me how to drive... if i had gotten right into a 300hp sti I'm sure I would of totaled it. Driving takes years to become good at, I'm 19 and I still don't think I would be able to tame a 300hp STI without doing something stupid His parents should've expected that. The car gave the kid a false confidence. Not so sure about the jail time though... kids gotta live knowing he killed 4 17 year olds, he ruined his, his parents, and 4 other families lives and thats gonna haunt him forever.

I'm only 19. got my first car was a 96 accord I paid cash I had been saving. I crashed it twice. once because I was speeding and tried to rip a corner. the curb won
anyways I got my **** together after this and worked hard and my grades up and my parents financed a 03 wrx for me (I pay monthly) they said first ticket I get my subi was going on Craigslist and.they weren't joking. I've had it for over a year now. take care of and haven't got a ticket
I guess what I'm trying to say if the parents teach the kid right and have them respect expensive things this wouldn't happen.
maybe start a kid off with a pos to beat on and learn some respect foe.the vehicle like I did

i took my drivers test in russia before i took it in the states. there its a 3-day long test, taken in MANUAL only. the written test explains how a car works, why things like oil and etc are needed how to change them. its in depth. you make one mistake, you're done.

then i took the test in jersey, and honestly it is by no means a test of driver skill. its a complete joke, the written test is a joke. its unreal.

my cousin lives in germany, there to get a license it costs 1,000$ to get it. so people value it a lot because of how much ti costs to get one. not to mention the drivers test isn't that easy once again.

this just came down to having no respect for the car, and the parents clearly not caring. i was 20 when i got my sti, granted i paid for it myself my parents told me that if i got in any trouble, they would make sure the car was gone even though its in my name.

its sad that kids these days dont fear their parents, let alone their fathers. forget the fact that i'd be afraid to get in trouble with the police, i'd be more petrified to bring that ticket home and get a serious ass whooping.

I think I would rather ask to be locked up, than come home to your father with a ticket.

This made me laugh because we were just talking about it today at work. And yea, not sure how it works but I know my dad has always made it clear it doesn't matter who pays for the car I act stupid and it's gone.

This is true, but as far as the gtrs and supras go they probably aren't 17 year old kids high as a kite. This comes down to the parents failing repeatedly, not just about the car, but how do you not know your son is on drugs.

Ive been around cars since I was 14. Did I do stupid ****? Yes. Did I ever have passengers? NO! I have a 300+ hp wagon. I've had it for about a little over a year and I've only done over 100 a handfull of times for extremely short periods. Ive been driving for more than 10 years well over 300k miles under my belt. I still believe I'm not a great driver. Yes I fell I'm good but not great. I don't agree it's 100% the parents fault but they definitely enabled it not by purchasing an sti but for not teaching their child on what's right and whats wrong. Besides the fact the he was speeding, besides the fact that it was wet, besides the fact that is was the sspkwy. HE WAS HIGH!!! I'm sorry but this is the nail in the coffin. My parents knew about the first time I got drunk, got layed, had a bad fart, didn't eat my wheaties all by just looking at me. I didn't have to say a damn thing. This is where the parents failed. Giving your child a motor vehicle(regardless of make) know he is doing illicit drugs( until courts rule otherwise)? FAIL!!!!! Also I don't know about any of you but when I was living home with my parents I had a midnight curfew. What the hell are all those kids doing out at 4am? Doubt it was an early start to the day. As for 25years in jail...... The torture of his friends voice, the scream he heard before the turn, the image of them dead........ Sounds like a life sentencing if you ask me.

You don't need passengers in your own car to endanger other peoples lives. As to parenting there is so much that a parent can do in terms of being present in their childs life. Regardless of how much they reinforce good or bad, there's only so much some kids will listen and those dumb thick headed ones will learn in a hard way.
I mean you just said about yourself that you do a lot of stupid **** but its ok cause its only you in the car. In a way implying your parents didn't do too good a job raising you though they knew you perfectly

Only read the one article so far and some of comments on the thread.

I'm interested how this all plays out in court. The parents may have known about their son driving the car but will it hold up in court?. I'm sure the parents bought and insured the sti. Would it hurt the kid to just say, I went for a joy ride and slipped the keys from my parent's dresser drawer, could all be hear say, that the parents knew about him driving.

Not denying that he wasn't going 110, but police estimates of 110 mph might be argued in court, curious how they came up with the estimated speed. Someone mentioned earlier that there were rainy or wet conditions when the accident took place, skid marks, are less prevalent in these conditions and accident scene investigators best tool in determining speeds.

News reports usually report blood alcohol levels, where are the THC levels in the article? Considering how severe the accident was ,although he only had minor injuries, I don't think any signs of impairment could have been determined by the officer, due to the whole shock thing. A blood test two hours later could have determined he had some in his system, was he impaired?

I see a lot a youngin' in stis, wrecking them, either "on pot", as referred to by one of the comments under the original article, or off it. I am not a parent, but my thoughts are this; I would not buy a new driver, a teen, a sports car. Their driving skill are only beginning to develop, It will take a couple years before they can begin to appreciate the sports car for what it is capable of. First thought that comes to mind when I see a teen in a new sports car "TOOL", then, if it even is a manual, could they downshift utilizing rev matching?, do they know where how to locate the apex of any given turn is?, would they be able feel a LSD working during hard turns?. If they answered yes to all these questions, then bygones be revenue generating bygones for the local authorities. If your teen is very passionate about fast cool cars, buy them a cheap pickup to haul their 2 stroke shifter-kart to the track where they will truly develop their driving skills and further their interest in motor sports and sports car and after they graduate from that some top tier university, buy them that rear wheel drive 300 something horsepower machine.

I grew up in Queens and I'm really familiar with Richmond Hill, which is the neighborhood all of these kids are from. All you see in that area, is teenage kids driving around in expensive luxury cars or high performance cars.

If you go to any car show or local strip in Queens, the nicest cars are usually being driven by 17-18yr old Guyanese or Trinidadian kids.

It's a well known fact that their parents usually get them the car they want as a "gift" for simply graduating from high school.

A couple of weeks ago, the NY Times had an article all about it

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/14/ny...ing-havoc.html

"My car from the factory, no bragging, is $53,000 after taxes,"....a 50k car, just for graduating high school?!? thats nuts.

Yup I go through liberty ave almost everyday... These kids not only have nice cars but they flaunt it like there is no tomorrow. Ignorant parents who mean well and don't understand all the possible consequences of buying your kid a fast car let alone any car for that matter. You are giving your child the privilege to drive...which is one huge underrated responsibility.

when i was 16 i had a friend that drove me around in his ford tempo and that thing would 20-30 seconds to hit 60mph. any higher it would shake violently. i think im going to get something similar for my son when the time comes. kids do some stupid things with hormones running wild. hopefully people will learn from this and drive safely on public roads. so depressing.

I agree with you... even though I'm an 18 Yr old Guyanese kid with a WRX. It all comes down to how people were raised.

This entire situation is F'n ridiculous, and brig a 26 year old who's is also a dater of two let me just put it like this. This is not the parents fault regardless f brand of car. My mom raised me as best a he could as I'm a good kid but my first car was an 88 Toyota supra and did I get a speeding ticket of course I did. That does not mean I had to also choose to drive recklessly as we'll getting a ticket for 70 in a 55 mph highway is just dumb luck people drive 7-15 over everywhere u go! This idiot kid should not have been pulling a constant 110 and trying to corner in wet conditions this is a decision HE made and is absolutely his fault, obviously coming from enough money to just receive an sti from ur parents he easily could have went to any track to have fun!

I agree. I don't understand how people blame parents for such actions. They weren't the ones driving, sorry they are successful and like to provide their child with nice things but they aren't the driver of the vehicle.

It doesn't matter what you or I, or what any of us think, or whether we agree or not.

The parents of this kid are going to take all the heat, simply because both the car and the car insurance, was most likely under THEIR name.

The insurance company can easily say this was a breach of contract and will wash their hands of EVERYTHING and most likely not have to pay one red cent.

I don't think it is a matter of blaming anyone just acknowledging all the factors that ultimately led up to the unfortunate event.

Exactly no one is talking about the insurance paying anything and it is about blame blaming the little punk that killed his friends and endangered te lives of who knows who else in the process
