Trunk noob needs help with Subs
Well I am a sedan/trunk noob, always had something open wagon/hatchback/SUV so I need some help on putting some subs in the trunk.
I did a little looking and came up with a few choices. One is just to put a loose hatch style in there, next would be a corner mount with a custom enclosure, though it looks like ECS makes one that fits there. Lastly would be to build a box where the subs face the rear seats and then put amp panel behind that to mount the amps and cover up some wiring. So first is there a "best" way for the subs to point in the trunk or is it just a matter or opinion. I was told by a local installer that facing them towards that back of the seat was not good as it would muffle them. Next does a certain box style tend to perform/sound better in a trunk. I have usually had sealed or ported, not a big bandpass fan. I moved to a sealed box in my wagon to save space but honestly always thoguth that my L7 sounded better in a ported box. Lastly what to get. I am looking at a cap of about $1000 for sub(s) and amps. I have toyed with the idea of 3 10's or 2 12's, of either JL, Alpine Type R, DEI, Crossfire, or another 12" L7 (already have 1). And for amps I was looking at either a DEI 750d or a 1500d, or a used 1100d. I had a 1100d but I sold it because I thought I could get something less and be happy, well guess again.

Looking for a little bit of both, midway beetween tight/hard and boomy. Something that can get lond for that rare occasion when I am in the mood, something that hits hard like it's going to knock my head off. Songs that I want to sound good would be like the tight quick bass of Master of Puppets, or the begining of Tom Sayer and Billie Jean. I listen to just about every thing but Rap, but mostly Rock (new and old), Guitar (Blues, Jazz, Surf and Austin) and a healthy dose of 80's pop and rock.
Goals wise I just want it to sound good, not going to compete. I have an indash DVD player so I would like it to sound good with a movie as well as music. I also want the trunk to look clean and still have some usuable space, kind of like Aaron's above. |

If you want all around good subs for any occation the Type R's are amazing i can tell you from experience. The W3 are similar however cost way more and can't match the SQ. I would go with the three 10's idea if your looking to cover all types of music, however you might have trouble fitting them unless you get creative. The reason i say 10's over two 12's is that the 12's can't give you the tight response that your going to demand from them from time to time. You can even keep it all Alpine with the amp...
Three Type R's $150 x 3= $450 Alpine MRD-M1000 = $559 Total $1009 |

when will this myth end? any remotely decent 12 will be just as "tight" as a 10, any good 15 will be just as "tight" as a 10, or even an 8. Don't let that influence your decision in the least. I think a pair of sealed Adire Shivas on 600rms would suit you well. A sealed Tempest on 500rms would work well too. www.adireaudio.com They aren't flashy, but they definately have it where it counts |

I also have to second the Adire Audio Shiva Mark IV. I believe they are back ordered until the beginning of March but definitely worth the wait and the money.
A pair of these in a sealed enclosure would give you some darn tight punchy bass. Adire suggests for cars a 25.5 liter sealed enclosure (per speaker). And of course cabin gain will help with the steeper roll off of the sealed enclousre for the extreme lows. Or you could go vented. Adire suggests 85 liters per speaker if vented. 600Wrms would be more than enough for either enclosure for both speakers. Of course you could go with their Brahma but whew kinda pricey. And they do have their "parthenon" speaker / motor coming out. It can have up to a 12" peak-to-peak stroke which is around 450 liters of linear dislacement when using a 48" x 48" panel. Priced around $3500 - $5000.00 ( http://www.adireaudio.com/Files/Dan/Parthenon/ ) As for myself I will be using the Shiva in a 25.5 liter sealed enclosure with an Avionixx AXA400.2 amp. Not the best of the best but it definitely won't be lacking. |

definition of thightness: quick punch of sound caused by too easy movement of the subwoofer cone in a larger than optimal box. punchy bass drum kick can be fun. but you must understand it's at the expense of subwoofer life. that's why my 10" is now out of duty after a few month of 300W rms driving in a 1.5 cu.ft box. that was my test box and I tought it would do not suffer too much (alpine recommend 200W rms and 0.6-1.2 cu.ft for their S 10") i was wrong. oh yeah, if' you're willing to built some kind of baffle to isolate the trunk from the cabin, you can place the sub right in the rear seat. otherwise, you'll get cancellation at certain frequencie, and the best way to minimize or avoid it is to face the sub back, close as possible to the rear (1" is ideal) |

....btw i also agree with the above that the enclosure makes a HUGE differnce on any sub... i have a small sealed box (.65 cu ft per divided chamber) |

Well I picked up 2 JL audio 12" W3v2 in a sealed box and an Alpine V12 MRD-M500 amp. Would have liked a W7 in a ported box or the 2 W3v2 in a ported box but the boxes that that had from JL would not fit in the back of the trunk. I wanted something removable for auto-x days. Got $100 off the MRD-M500 since the M501 is coming out so that was a good deal. Sounds good, more then loud enough for my tastes.
I also listened to a pair of 12" Type R which sounded good but I thought that these sounded a little better. Thanks for the help |
