Well, 20% is 20% no matter how you look at it. Typical for Subarus.

Typical for Subaru - be glad it broke 200 on that dyno.
That said, I want one. Heuberger should have em coming in this week. |

The girlfriend just ordered a 2.5i Premium, Black, with all weather and navigation.
I think I am more excited than she is. What do you all think about the BRZ wheels on the '14 Forester? Probably will buy her these once the car arrives. |

Have you thought about XV rims? Those would look better IMO.

Brz wheels blow. They blow even more on a forester. Save your money and take her somewhere nice.

I finally got a chance to drive one - 2.5i Premium w/CVT and Navigation.
Here are my overall thoughts: Pros: -Epic outward visibility - easily bests every other competitor in the segment -Very quiet cabin while cruising, at low speed, and at idle. -Power-to-weight ratio!!! Unlike the Crosstrek/Impreza, which strain and peter out when you need the extra "oomph" the Forester is ready to accept your request. EG accelerating from 70 to 80 to pass is a breeze. -Aesthetics - She looks great in person and the wheels look MUCH better than they do in pictures (they would look even better in gunmetal, too) -Fuel economy is on point. I took her on an hour long, 30 mile trip that involved 2 stints on the interstate, lots of city driving, and a short stint up the side of a mountain and the computer reported that I was right at 29.4 MPG after all was said and done. Not too shabby (of course there's some margin of error there, but it's good regardless) -Engine bay layout- It's straightforward and easily acceptable. It puts Ford's EcoBoost engine bay jungle to shame and it's right up there in terms of simplicity with Honda and Toyota. -It has a commanding seating position while still feeling somewhat agile. -The massive sunroof is a nice touch. I was not a fan at first, but when you open that baby wide open and let the sun shine through you realize that the ding in cargo capacity is worth it. It's a worthy successor to my convertible :P Cons: -Very "eager" to accelerate. I found it difficult to maintain speed limits of 25 and even 40 due to the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal. -Backup camera display looks tiny on the recessed 4.3" display. Subaru is still WAY behind the times when it comes to the center dash layout. -The seats - My god the seats. I cannot overstate how poor they were. If you're anything other than a 5'6" petite lady chances are that you'll find the driver's seat uncomfortable (and even then it's quite questionable). I come in at 5'11" and 175lbs and I felt that the seats were incredibly uncomfortable. I tried adjusting them throughout my hour-long trip but could not find a "sweet spot" - I am hoping that the leather seats are more comfortable as they should be differently-bolstered. Elongating the front of the seat cushion may help some. -Navigation touchscreen is awkward to use and of minimal use. The controls are not intuitive, the menu layout is crummy, and most pertinent information is displayed on the 4.3" LCD above it. Avoid it if possible. Although my list of cons is fairly short, the seats are a deal-breaker if the Limited model does not offer better support. This is the first modern car that I've test-driven for which I could not find a comfortable driver's seat setting. It was not an onset discomfort, either. It was uncomfortable within minutes of sitting down. I would avoid the cloth seats - assuming the leather ones or sport ones are better bolstered - My two cents, anyway. Aside from the interminable seats the rest of the car left me with a smile on my face. It has reassured me that I was right to wait for the new Forester before making a purchase, but I am still undecided if I'll ultimately choose it in the end. If the limited's seats are more comfortable, it will likely be my new vehicle. If they aren't, I'll probably opt for a 2013 Rav4 Limited, which I came away extremely impressed with on Saturday. |

Not sure I can really take a review seriously by someone who uses the word epic. you're either really young and don't know any better or you are actually older and using a young person word like "epic" and trying to fit in which makes it even worse.

The depth of my vocabulary would likely make your head spin. I chose to use the word "epic" because having tried nearly every car in this segment it was the fitting descriptor. Visibility is great and you don't have to drive a hideous box on wheels (See: Pre-2009 models) to achieve it. Subaru really nailed it by keeping the rear windshield/quarter windows less tapered than most and dropping the side-view mirrors down/opening up the A-pillar area. That said, if I don't find the leather seats to be any more comfortable than the cloth seats when I head over there again this week, I may end up with a new Rav4 o_O

Hmmm. Interesting on the seats. This thing will be going on frequent 4hr trips.
Guess I better really pay attention to 'em on the test drive. |

Toyota has the better infotainment system, Subaru has the better (and actually useful) AWD system, Honda has the better interior. Beauty has always been in the eye of the beholder when it comes to styling so points awarded on "just looks" is irrelevant unless you're actually buying the CUV to begin with. |

It's disappointing to read your take on the seats. I sat in a Forester at an Auto Show a few months ago, hoping it had pre-production parts. Guess not. I thought they were absolutely awful then.
Maybe the leather and/or XT seats will be better. Otherwise this might be a deal breaker. |

Will just have to test drive car yourself to see if the seats are comfortable for your body or not. Each body is different. KC mentioned seats are just as comfortable as the XV which I found very comfortable. |

Yeah last year I was at a 4x4 only beach and someone tried to drive in with their CRV. It did not end well. It was more to do with ground clearance and tires than anything wrong with the AWD system though. His tires dug in and he got high centered and that was the end of that. Putting a crappy AWD system on a car based SUV does not make it a capable off roader.

Even Mitsubishi's AWD system has a lock button but THAT system actually is capable of sending enough power to the rear wheels. People with RAV4's and CR-V's won't notice it because they don't KNOW how or when to use it in the first place. The people buying up the CR-V and the RAV4 that outsell the Forester don't know because they're not people who realize the difference but it's NOT because the systems, Subaru vs. Honda and Toyota, are equally capable (because they are definitely not). They look at other numbers and don't realize they WILL care in certain situations. They only start to care when they can't get what they want. By then it's already too late for most of them and that's the price they pay willingly when it comes to those without such knowledge.

Just got my Forester 2014 Touring XT
Black and in the snow tonight perfect time to test the xmode =) Xmode xmode is pretty cool it shows the wheels which one loses traction. The car has great traction in about 1-2 inches of snow I didn't have to worry about stopping early and turning. Xmode shuts off fairly quick once you pick up speed. Same bolstering, etc... However, I'd also have to give the nod (surprise surprise) to the XV. I think the bottom seat cushions are about 1" longer than in the Forester. Using the unscientific method of putting my hand under my kneepit and measuring... it would touch the XV seat, but not the Forester. I didn't do that until my wife (who is shorter and more sensitive to this) mentioned it to me while waiting for the papers to be drawn up. --kC |
