Default Which Tire Size for a (mild) ESP WRX Rain Tire ...

Goodyear GS-D3 ... to be used as a heavy rain tire in local ESP events ... mild ESP WRX. This tire keeps getting top marks as a rain tire in two recent tires comparison tests ... besides being very decent in the dry. The tread design is almost identical to my old Toyo T1S's ... which were also outstanding in the wet.

Which size would you recommend ? Mild ESP WRX ... how about a STX WRX

Baseline 225/45/17 (24lbs) 7.5 (Rim) 8.8 (Section) 7.6 (Tread) 24.9 (Dia)
235/40/17 -- 23lbs -- 8.5 ---- 9.5 ----- 8.1 ----- 24.4
245/35/17 -- 21lbs -- 8.5 ---- 9.7 ----- 8.3 ----- 23.8
245/40/17 -- 26lbs -- 8.5 ---- 9.7 ----- 8.3 ----- 24.7
255/40/17 -- 26lbs -- 9.0 --- 10.2 ----- 8.7 ----- 25.0

Or ... would you think a Full Tread Toyo RA-1 would be better (ESP) ... in heavy rain ... puddles.

235/40/17 24# 10.0 cross section 24.0 diameter

Nice photoshop. SD doesn't get rain.

Honestly... why comprimise? If you have the $$ to pay for the 255/40-17s GS-D3s, how come the 245/40-17 Hoosier Radial Wet isn't on the list? It's less than $10 more a tire than the biggest one you have listed... and will more than likely outperform the Goodyear in the wet.

That said, I would pick the skinniest tire available that you listed... the 235/40-17. Or one you didn't list - 225/45-17. A skinnier tire has less water to push through, and will have more weight per sq. in on the footprint forcing more water evacuation. If it's wet, a wider tire won't get you any more traction than a skinnier tire... but when it comes to standing water,a skinnier tire will cut through it faster. (Kinda the same philosophy with snow too).

Fontana/LA ... not San Diego ... and you missed the ProSolo this year where it did rain like that, again, in Fontana. After just setting up a great Tom Berry designed course ... longer then then usual ProSolo course ... it rained and hailed so badly that a third of the course was under water ... literally. You could barely see some of the cones sticking out above the water.

That's White Water on the left side of the shot ... water was pouring in so fast ... basically draining CA Speedway.

We had to redesign the course completely ... going 90 degrees to what we had ... making it an unusually short ProSolo course. :-(

225/45/17 was the first size listed above! :-)

No Kuhmo Wet R tire (coming out soon) ... the "rain" tire would also be the tire that I use to drive to the track ... cars not a daily driver anyway ...

Happy Thanksgiving! Yeah ... we've got a practice tomorrow, Ladies School on Sat and a race on Sunday! ... while a lot of the country freezes. Thank you Thank you!
