Why are things in Canada still so expensive?
Items in Canada have always been more expensive that items in the US....mostly because our dollar was pretty low compared to the US dollar ($1.00 US = $0.65 CAD).
But for the last year or so, the US dollar has fallen (or the CAD dollar has gone up) to the point of $1.00 US = $0.87 CAD...which is almost equal! I understand that at first, we werent sure how long this would lastm but it's been pretty steady for a year now, and doesnt look like it's going anywhere...so why wont prices drop on a lot of things? For instance: USA Subaru WRX: $25,000 USD (or $28,7500 CAD) Canada Subaru WRX: $35,000 CAD (or $30,500 USD) As you can see, even with the currency conversion, we're still being overcharged $5000 USD I can understand that a few years ago, when our dollar was low, $35K CAD would actually be relatively close to $25K USD, but nowadays, this is not the case...

Because reprinting packages to relfect the new price would be a pain the ass. Also it is just funny.

That's why I do more of my online shopping in US dollars when our dollar is strong like this.
I'm due for a contact lens renewal and it'll cost me about USD$130 which, after shipping and ForEx, will come to about C$165-170. The same 6-month prescription here at my optometrist is C$260, and the best price I've seen (Costco) is still just over C$200. Use it to your advantage and buy your US counterparts' overstock, you silly Goose. -A |

Should we expect Canadian salaries to also plummet accordingly?

The only way to fix it is to start a series of television commercials accosting retailers (of cars and any other goods) for not adjusting the value of the Canadian dollar to the value of their actual goods. You must get it known on a national level and stir up great levels of anger for being ripped off compared to your American counterparts. My $.02

The sad thing is that after certification, duties and taxes, you won't end up ahead buying your car in the US and importing it into Canada. -A |

Edit: BTW, I've been living in Toronto for the past 5 years, but am paid in US dollars. I've taken a hell of a pay cut as the US dollar has weakened. I'm the first person that would love to see Canadian prices adjust downwards. |

The weakness of the US dollar really shouldn't affect trade between Canada and Japan. Maybe a Pontiac would be cheaper? |

Canadian dollar vs. Japanese Yen While the Canadian dollar is up on strength somewhat against other currencies over the past few years, the difference is mostly due to the weakening US dollar. |
