Default Rallispec rules- wrx 2.0 Ecutek Stg 2-->VF39/Stg 4/2.0 Review

Ok, I had been saving up parts and funds all year to give my wrx more power with a better setup. I started with this:

Helix catted dp
spt catback
perrin up
ecutek
k&n intake

The car was a great daily driver like this but (of course) I wanted some more power. I pieced together these parts on the forums over a few months:

used Hypeflow TMIC
used vf39
sti pinks
walbro pump

This past friday I drove the car down to Rallispec in Hainesport, NJ. The office/garage is in the middle of no where and I was planning on sitting around, but instead they offered me a ride to the nearest strip mall while they worked on my car. Rallispec was awesome to deal with - very friendly, answered all my questions, gave me a cheap labor rate, and perfectly installed a bunch of used parts from different manufacturers. The install took all day (11-6) and required modification of a few hoses/wires/gaskets. Dave took his time and really made sure everything went well. Basically, Rallispec rules and I will be doing business with them again in the future.

The stage 4 setup is amazing. very little lag, I'd say full boost by about 3700 rpm? Good to drive around town, etc. Dave at Rallispec road tuned the car to 17 psi and it hits pretty hard for a small turbo. It's been said before, but this is how I think the wrx should have come from the factory. On the 2 hour ride back to Long Island I drove the car pretty hard the entire way. (3rd gear pulls, constant boost, etc.) When I got home the Hyperflow TMIC was cool to the touch, whereas the stock TMIC would have been heatsoaked for at least an hour. Th stock td04 would fall off a bit on the highway, this one just pulls straight to redline. The car is simply a different vehicle.

Couple questions:

1. At WOT in 3rd gear at about 4000 rpm I sometimes hear a fluttering type of sound? I dont know how to describe it, it doesn't happen all the time or seem to affect performance. WTF is it?

2. Whats the best tranny fluid to use with this setup? Should I keep using stock stuff?

3. Will a shortshifter, tranny mounts, or motor mounts increase my chances of grenading my transmission? I want to do these mods at some point but I am a college student that can't pay for a new tranny.

Thanks for reading, I'm gonna go play with some evos

full boost at 3700 sounds kinda late. The best tranny fluid is imo redline lightweight shock proof or uncle scottys cocktail.

Fluttering sound could be the sound of the wastegate opening and closing on the vf39.

not 100% tho.

I want your setup

I think the best tranny fluid for our cars is the Valvoline 75W90 dino fluid, I've tried Mobil 1 synth, and Neo synth then Neo mixed with Syncromesh... All of which I found weren't working well with the syncros. The plain ol dino fluid has given me no trouble at all.

I have a very similar setup and I too think it is the way the wrx should have came from the factory.

djerickd -

dave road tuned my car so I don't have any hp/tq numbers or graphs. However, one of my buddies has an 04 sti w/tbe and he can't keep up past 2nd gear

I definitely think the tune is a bit conservative but I'm really not trying to melt my tranny/synchros. If I do want the turbo to spool a bit quicker do I have to get a retune?

Any other opinions on that fluttering sound? It might be normal but I haven't heard it on any other vf39'd wrxs. Thanks for the replies..

I got my swap done with them, they did a real nice job. The only downside is because they're popular the wait times tend to be a bit long. If I ever upgrade my turbo I'll try to go back there.

read much?

setup sounds sweet. i'd think a vf39 should spool faster than that though. you're in big16g/nearly 18g territory. should be hitting peak right around 3k. a wideband might help in tuning some of this out.

Yeah, no dyno charts or numbers etc. I plan on going to etown at some point to get a good 12 second run in. When I went there I saw a few cars from these forums like the 300 whp red rs as well as a jdm swapped rs. I can't explain enough how friendly and trustworthy these guys are.

Any way to get quicker spool without tuning? Are there are Ecutek tuners in the new orleans/baton rouge area? I was just browsing dyno charts and it looks/feels like I spool slower than most by almost 1000 rpm? let me know guys, thanks.

to get faster spool you are goin need another tune. I know from other cars i have raced that they like to tune there cars conservative...maybe a little too much. You might want to look for another tuner

He doesn't wanna break his tranny, leave it as is and hope for the best

The closer you go towards the edge the easier it is to fall over. I'm in the process of doing the same stuff you did, except I went with the 2.5l block because I blew my 2.0

the fluttering is very likely just the wastegate actuator system on the turbo at work. With certain turbo/downpipe combo's, the sound can be rather noticeable. If you bring the windows down, you can hear it as well as you accelerate into boost.

As far as the spool, assuming that it can be brought down, you will be needing a retuned. Being that it is a little different compared to a VF30, It seems perfectly fine to me though... I think people are just used to seeing them spool up faster on STi's with the extra displacement.

If YOU are happy with it as is though, then no harm will be done in keeping it as is. It is all down to you really. Back when I had an 1820 on a catless TMIC setup, it was reaching fullboost where yours is. Not bad at all to drive... After a while anyway you get used to the spool up characteristics and keeping the revs up slightly so that you can access the power without too much delay.
