Default just parted motor...pics and questions

are those scrape marks normal? my dad said it should be fine, theyre about a thousandth <you can barely feel them> deep and look to have been caused by the rings

looks like the other pic didnt turn out

anyways theres wear marks on the crank bearings, is this normal @ 2500 miles?
should i be worried?

alex

As to the picture you posted the crosshatching pattern is normal. I don't really know about the rest of what you said.

the cross hatching is normal, I think he was asking about those 4 vertical scratches though.

No, not good. If you can feel those scratches at all, you will have blow-by. It's hard to tell how deep the scratches are from looking at the photo. Ask a machine shop to see if a gentle hone will remove it.

That's a motor that wasn't broken in properly kiddies. At 2500 miles your bearings should look pretty flawless.

the cross hatch pattern is fine as someone else mentioned. however the scratches that run the length of the cylinder are definitely not normal/ok. we cant tell how bad the damage is from a picture so please have it looked at by a professional mechanic/shop in your area. your bearings should also not have any damage so i would probably replace those while you have the motor apart. if in doubt have it checked and re-checked before you re-assemble everything. good luck and please post back to let us know how it turns out.

i check in parts as a job <machine parts>
the scratches are a thousandth deep <you can barely feel them>

of course the motor wasnt broken in properly lol i dont like the idea of a soft break in

but it did have a good 800 miles of low boost/very rich however

ben, i told jarrad to order me some pistons the other day, you guys were supposed to quote me a total price then order them...lol

stay on top of your game

A scratch a full 0.001" deep is like the Grand Canyon. If you can feel it at all, even with pick or a fingernail, it's too deep. You're not going to luck out and have the new rings fix it for you. Try a hone, but if that doesn't do it, then you need to bore it. Lucky you are getting new pistons anyway.

I don't like the look of the bearings either. For what they cost, just go ahead and replace them. It's not worth putting iffy parts into the motor when you consider how much they cost to replace against the amount of labor and downtime you'll suffer later on.

How many miles were on the motor when you first changed the oil? More than 20 by the looks of it.

Did that engine ever sit idling for an extended period during the beginning of life? Or did it ever have the crap rev'd out of it in neutral?

A machine shop might or might not be able to hone that out. There is no great rocket science to honing. Finding a bottle brush style cylinder hone shouldn't be too tricky, get a good electric drill and try it yourself. I don't think they'll hone out though.

Check how much piston skirt clearance you have
Probably everyone on this board has some sort of scoring, subaru has posted on their website a piston they are developing to fight this. I would definetly get the new pistons moly coated. I wonder if you should put it all back together and get some more miles and the block if you want to bore it. If it was mine I would do the backyard hone job check all the clearances reassemble put some miles on the motor then bore it and put the new stuff in.

Remember your peak cylinder pressures are near the top I dought you'll lose anything just clean the heck out of the bores. The should be tight they're cast, its being real loose which is bad (for a street motor).

That's way worse than my Ej257, and mine was driven for 2-3k mi with a blown #4. And I plan on honing mine before I reassemble and sell it. Those bearings are pretty ugly as well. What did I tell you about tuning by detonation?

You should see my cylinders!

220,000 with a shot valve for the first "rebuild" No honing of course

Then I shot the shiet out of the top of #4 piston and shattered all the ring lands in it as well.

Then I again shattered #4 AND #2. Even broke a ring into about 20 pieces. I scored the top of #2 pretty good with a piece of the ring.

So I just stuck new pistons and rings in again. I only smoke a "tad" right in the morning. Then have no problems or smoke the rest of the day.

So I would say, unless you have the money to tear it down (which you did!) don't do it. But since you did, do it! I would do it, but never really had the time or money.

yeah,
but Doug, you are playing at R&D and using $100 junkyard blocks. He bought a brand new Ej257 STi block. His errors have greater consequences...

ok matt
i didnt tune by knock
my block had to have been screwed up by the factory

some jackass putting a crank bearing in put a ding in it, i dont believe its on an area where the crank touches it beacuse theres no scaring on the crank but something wasnt right from the beginning of the life of this motor

i also talked to tom @ techworks
he informed me that the clearance on piston to cylinder is -.01 mm to .01 mm
i must have had a tight piston
he said hes seen that many times and that a hone should fix it if not a mild bore will fix it which would probably be more benificial

noone is trying to have a pissing contest with you. But trying to blame the damage in your engine on misassembly makes me laugh. Those pictures don't lie. That's all. Leaving this thread now...

tech works said theyve seen that crap all the time
y would they blatently lie to me matt?

did you look up piston specs for clearance?

-.014 to .014
kinda weird you have to press in the piston and thats acceptable
