Default Tesla adds $6,500 'Performance Plus' option to Model S; adds range, improves handling

Autoblog: http://green.autoblog.com/2013/05/05...el-s-adds-ran/

Quote:
Tesla Motors is adding a special performance package for its all-electric Model S that not only will add miles of single-charge range, but will make sure those miles aren't driven sideways.

The automaker is charging $6,500 for its new "Performance Plus" option, which includes wider rear tires, upgraded stabilizer bars and bushings, among other goodies. Tesla says it took "hundreds of iterations affecting every detail of the suspension," but "our vehicle dynamics team was able to achieve the rare outcome of simultaneously improving performance, comfort and efficiency." The new rear Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires are 20 mm wider than previous tires and are "staggered for improved acceleration on low grip surfaces." Folks will also be able to get between six and 12 miles of range from those new tires.

Tesla continues to move its already up-market car into the proverbial stratosphere, and for good reason. The company, which beat its first-quarter sales targets, discontinued its cheapest variant of the Model S because of lack of demand even as it has improved the financing options for the EV.

I see a lot of these around Chicago, including a white one at a funeral on Friday. I wanted to ask about it but since it was owned by one of the sons it wasn't really the right time.

It really is a good looking car. I see them quite often in the SF Bay Area, and they are instantly recognizable from any angle while still being classically proportioned.

I've read that they are pretty nice to drive as well, which was a surprise. Their marketing annoys me quite a bit, but I guess you have to be aggressive when you are a startup that wants to sell ultra premium products. As long as the car looks that good and also fun to drive, I hope they succeed.

Tesla is a U.S.-based manufacturer of battery electric vehicles (EVs). Senate Bill 327 (SB 327) as introduced, would prohibit North Carolinians from purchasing these electric vehicles from Tesla by limiting how such vehicles could be sold through the Internet. Recently, Motor Trend unanimously voted the Tesla S the 2013 Car of the YearŽ. Other states allow Tesla to sell directly to the public in a variety of ways - including through the Internet.

Over the past five years Tesla has learned that selling directly through a variety of avenues, including the Internet, is critical to overcoming market barriers in order to bring this new, innovative, all electric technology to consumers. The traditional franchise dealer approach creates a fundamental conflict of interest between selling gasoline cars, which account for 99% of their business, and selling the new technology of electric cars. Furthermore, restricting service options to consumers hampers the ability of North Carolina consumers from enjoying the full benefits of this exciting new technology.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS

Tesla used more than two-dozen different North Carolina suppliers in the development and production of the Model S. As part of Tesla's commitment to customer service they have opened the first service center in Raleigh to service the almost 100 Tesla owners in the state. The demand continues to grow in North Carolina - by April of this year, there were reservations for almost 60 new Model S. Tesla plans to open a sales location and additional service centers in the near future. Service/Sales centers add between $7-10 million in direct economic activity and 15-20 jobs per location. Additionally, car sales provide sales tax revenue along with annual registration and title fees.

SOLUTION

Amend SB 327 to permit U.S.-based manufacturers of zero-emission all-electric vehicles to sell their vehicles directly to North Carolina consumers. Learn how you can take action now, to help educate lawmakers about this important issue!

Geeze.. we need to abolish the franchise laws that are responsible for mandatory dealerships altogether... not just for low volume zero-emissions vehicles.

Yeah I agree it makes no sense, but dealers make a lot of contributions in a whole lot of states.

It's stupid that I can't just buy the cars from the manufacturer direct and have to have middle men in any purchase. We have the internet now... I should be able to circumvent everything in the supply chain I want as long as I'm willing to purchase it online.

Meh, I have to agree with ALL of you guys....no reasons dealers should have to be in the loop. They can just be a service port for your car. As good as some interactive websites are, the salesman just adds to the overhead and offers nothing substancial in return.

Oh when I said I agree with everything you guys know I meant everything but wanting one.

Just wanted to clear that up

You know

in case any of you were confused...

Just in case.

Agree too. I hate the whole idea of having someone trying to just sell me a particular car and who really does not care for what I'm looking for. Especially when they know nothing about the car and all they do is read verbatim from the brochure or magazine articles. Then when I start negotiating on price, they just become this awkward middle man between me and the manager. I prefer to do my own research, drive the car, and find something that matches what I want without all the hassle. If I have a question, then I'll ask.

I still think dealerships would have their place. Good dealerships, interested in good customer service, would make a killing and the vast majority of new car buyers would still be happy to buy from a dealership along with all service.

^Nice! Is it as fun as all the reviews make it out to be?

I agree on the dealership thing, there's no reason to make it mandatory. The local government can benefit just as much from the manufacturer run dealers as they would have to pay the same sales tax anyway.

As far as the thread topic goes I wonder if Tesla will offer the option to upgrade to this package for owners who already have their car like they did the Roadster.
