2005 STi stuts/springs on an 2004 wagon?
Is the installation of 2005 STi stuts/springs on an 2004 wagon possible?
A local guy just got an 05 STi and the possible plan is to put his struts/springs on my 04 wagon. I currently have the WRX stuts with 04 OEM STi springs. I hope to upgrade to the full STi "coilovers". This is a what-if type question right now as the owner isn't sure if he is going to mod his Tein coilovers to fit, get springs, or wait for the "correct" coilovers. Anyone have any thoughts or guesses?

The '05 STi has a thicker front mounting point (where the strut attaches to the hub). I'm not sure if the bolt pattern is the same, but if it is, you would need a spacer to make them fit.
I'm also not sure, but the rear may be the same way. |

This wont work. They are different. Maybe if dude will give up his whole spindle, hub, etc,.then yead you're in business , but this wont work.

Since I don't have my eye on it I may be wrong here, but if it was thicker, wouldn't I have to either get the correct mounting bracket off an 05 (best option) or widen the existing bracket (ghetto option)?
Myles, I might just buy the parts if I can keep my OEM wheels. <off to do some parts checking> |

I think you're gonna find this to be a difficult project. As I know of a team running an 2004 sti in T1with a pretty good budget that realized this wont work. I have the details somewhere here, just need to find them. But kudos if you can make it happen. I think you';re gonna need alot of parts. Let us know how it turns out.

spindle...that's the word I was looking for.
Unabomber - like RCE said, it's not a bracket, it's the spindle. The "right" way would be to replace your whole hub assembly. I would think you could fab up some sort of spacer if you knew how much thicker the STi spindle was (and assuming the bolt holes line up). I'm not sure what that would do to your alignment though. |

Thanks for the help. I will attempt to track down the correct parts as much as possible and do the "right thing" as much as my budget (which is near zero) will allow. Custom fabbing is no problem, but I would prefer to do it right or not at all. Unless anyone else has any input, if and when the deal goes down, I'll post my results. Why couldn't my buddy have gotten an 04?

Well this is the Deal I have a Full Coil-over system (Tein HA's) for a 03 WRX, the plan is if we can get my TEIN's to work then my 05 STI will got to the Unabomber Wagon.
I just e-mail TEIN to asked them what is need or if any is need to get them on to my STI, when i ask TEIN when I though I was getting a 04 STI all they said I need was new top-hats for the rear. Now with the hole bold pattern change I don't I'd they will fit? So What we need is the spec beteewn the 03, 04 wagon, and 05 STI suspension. I have the 03, 04 but no 05 STI. If we get this to work WE WILL post how we did....... I couldn't get a 04 Becouse THERE WAS NONE at Perry , or I would have . |

Well I just got the phone with TEIN, this is what they said, that the 03 coilovers will not work at all, do to the inside to the tire will hit the coil-overs , the bolt hole on the mounting points of the coil-over on the top and botton are in different locations
So know i'm going to have to sell the coil-overs and get springs for or something becouse, the 03 HA will not fit on the 05 STI , Sorry Ron I know you wanted those struts.... PM or call me later and I'll talk more about it |

My friend put my rejected stock 2005 STI springs and top hats on his 2002-3 WRX wagon with his stock struts, and it went OK. Didn't lower all that much, but he likes the handling change.
I also contacted Tein about coil-overs for 2005 STI, and they said the first to be available will be the SS on November 4th. I will probably get them, because the STI Pinks just aren't really doing it for me. -Mike |

I can't see how the Coil-over will rub on the inside of the tire I would think if the lower mounting is the same I think we can get top to work....
NM the lower mounting point is wider in the front so on worke worke Last edited by blksubie; 09-14-2004 at 08:15 PM. |

here is what TIEN just e-mailed to me today,
Scott, Hello and thank you for your support of TEIN High Performance Suspension. Unfortunately it is the bottom rear knuckles that have changed in size. We do not have any suspension products for the '05 STi yet but they are in development. The first product we have scheduled for release is the Type SS Dampers November 4, 2004. Please visit our website www.tein.com occasionally for product updates.
