So I figured I'd update my quest for 400whp post.
I now have 480whp on pump and 550+whp on race gas. (Stock STi dyno's out at 210whp on same dyno) And I have had this car since it was new in 2005. So I know the car well. Its taken a lot of money. And just when you think you are done spending money. You spend more. I even had to rebuild my 6spd, go bigger in brakes, respring the car's coilovers. Add new front and rear LSD, replaced my wheel studs as well. So double your budget if your going to try a 400whp car. Your going to need it and then some. Even at my last track event the power can be a handful. I only use the 91 map its more then enough power. Is a video of my sliding at 70mph, I thought I had got the tires up to temp enough. And I didn't. I was lucky to have caught that. It doesn't look like much. But in the car and in the seat. It was plenty. I have only had the race map in once. It was when I picked the car up from the dyno. Tell you.... making a left turn on a city street thru a 4 lane intersection was instant sideways as soon as the boost hit. Was funny about a mile down the road after. But was a lesson at the time it happened. And yes, 0-100-140mph comes very fast. Make sure you are NOT on OEM brakes. The next big thing that sucks, If you live in a area that has smog enforcement. Well I live in California. I have not driven my car on the street in almost a year. 400whp makes a lot of mechanical sounds. Which draws the local and state police to take notice. I have not been stopped yet as I do not drive it on the street. But I know others with less that have paid big fines and had to go to court over modding their cars. |

Fantastic Article! It has been a long time since I strapped in with a harness and cage around me with 600 RWHP in a straight line. Sage advice for fellow Subie owners that havent experienced the upper boundaries.

I just purchased an '03 WRX that to put it lightly...has definitely been tinkered with. It was a bit of a spur of the moment purchase, but I had been looking for quiet some time. From what I've been told by the dealer (can't really trust them much) and friends, it has definitely been heavily modded with things like a Greddy FMIC, "Racing" fuel pump, etc. I don't have a specific list just yet (need my expert Subaru brother to tell me that ), but it definitely is much quicker than what a stock '03 WRX would be pulling. I don't think it's pushing 400 whp, which sounds silly, but whoever modded the car before me probably just stuck the FMIC on there to look cool.
The reason I am posting in this sticky (first post too!) instead of making a new post is that this sticky rings true to home. Previous to this car, I had been driving a '92 accord (stock, DD type of deal) for the better part of 6 years. Safe to say, the power of the '03 is definitely humbling. Hell, I would say that normally someone that trades up like I did would probably wrap it around a pole in no time. Luckily, I've driven my brother's "heavily" modified '04 WRX wagon before, so maybe I am accustomed to all the power. Really the only way to go about it is to completely respect the power (at risk of sounding cliche) and don't drive like a maniac until you feel 100% comfortable. I've been relying on driving it around like I did my Honda, so hopefully I won't blow up in a cloud of smoke any time soon . Anyways, glad to be apart of the forums! |

Fantastic post, very informative. My plans are almost exactly what you have posted here. What kind of suspension and brake upgrades do yo recommend for one who wants around 320whp?

Check out some of the sub forums, particularly the suspension one. As for brake, the cheap route (bout 1k new) is to go with stainless steal lines, better fluid, 4 pot calipers upfront, H6 upgrade in the rear. If you want to go really cheap, just do lines and fluid, but you will notice an improvement with the 4 pots and H6 upgrades. More expensive is find used STI Brembo's, or buying a big brake kit (which you don't really need unless you are tracking your car very often).

Very helpfully thanks for the post. Just bought an 05 sti last week and this post just changed the game plan for me. I wasn't trying to get 400whp but I am trying to get enough where I won't have to built up the engine at all.

I wanted to post to see if anyone's tweaked some of the wish list for the new Sti's. I have one coming in March 12th and can't wait to start stockpiling parts in the garage...=P
Seems like swapping the turbo is the only real way to get into the 350-360 range, according to the exhaustive hours I've spent talking with tuners and several forums. So I'm game for that, just didn't know if the G20 was still a go-to or maybe a little larger now with the 2.5...just kind of overwhelmed and looking for a little direction. I'm in Tallahassee, FL, so there are no reputable tuners around, so I'm kind of at a loss with who to talk to, any info is greatly appreciated, as well as any recommendations as to tuners in the north/mid Florida region that people trust. Thanks a ton in advance! -Pat |

Fantastic post. It is always something when you have an import with that kind of power. Whether it be breaking things, melting things, ect. ect. Not to mention your own safety and the safety of others. (:

A couple weeks ago, I read a thread on another forum, a kid bitching about how much subaru's suck, and how they handle like garbage.
Here is the back story. 18 years old Got his lisc at 17, so he had it AT MOST a yeah and a half or so. Drove his parents car that time, It was an automatic camry. THIS WAS THE ONLY VEHICLE HE HAD EVER DRIVEN. Spoke of his illustrious street racing career that he had already "made a name for himself" with. Right. With an automatic camry His parents had allowed him to modify it a little, he tinted the windows. came into a large sum of money, I think inherited or something. Bought a used 05 STI, TOWED it straight from the place he bought it, to a shop. Where they did the following Coilovers 18" wheels FUSION brand tires. (for those not familiar, fusion is firestones wannabe street racer tire line, they are garbage if even that good) Brand new block with forged pistons/rods/crank/spun balanced to like 10k heads/cams GT40R (yes, you read it right, a 40R) Meth injection 50 shot. rollbar some other suspension goodies race seats and some other legit race car bits. Yes, a 50 shot on top of all of that. Plus, we all know how well subies even with built motors, hold up to even a small shot of nitrous. Oh, Im sorry, he said NAWZ lol. Dyno'd at like 530whp on pump not on the bottle. (There were pics, including pics of him with it, so it was a legit story) Gets it home Remember, the ONLY vehicle he has ever driven, was an automatic camry. Gets it out on the street by his house, brings it up to about 4500 and sidesteps the clutch at WOT. He actually made it into 4rd gear before coming off the road, through a fence, into a ditch, into the air, onto the roof, and into some trees. It balled the car up like a wad of tinfoil. That happened, soley because "Subaru's are pieces of junk that dont handle at all and his parents camry handles better" Obviously it had nothing to do with driver skill level, because he had after all, fully a year driving a car that put maybe 1/5th the power to the ground that this STI did, with half the traction to get it moving. Plus all his extensive roll racing experience. (because roll racing takes some real skill yo) He got hopelessly flamed to hell and back. Ill see if I can remember where I saw it. It wasnt even on a car forum. |

I have to agree with twinscroll here that if you want to go fast you have to be able to stop. Stock oem brakes most likely aren***699;t going to cut it. Safety also becomes more of an issue with higher hp numbers.
