You have an easy 500hp car. The main ingredients for any 2.0l Subie (02-05wrx UDSM variety): -Built hybrid short block with cams -STi 6spd conversion ....a built 5MT gearbox is a waste of $$ imho -at least a 255-300lph fuel pump -850-1000cc injectors -something above a Blouch Dom 3.0 -headers and an open exhuast -3+" intake/inlet a few other things here and there, then you have 400whp...maybe. Depends on the dyno and tuner and if you're using pump gas/E85/Meth. My thought is unless you have Race gas (100+OCT), willing to do a Water/meth injection system, or E85 readily available, anything over 350-390whp is a waste of time. I use all of this based on how a Mustang Dyno (heart breaker) will read hp and tq. -which most people will say is a true reading dyno...debatable though. Other's have different thoughts and opinions. Mine comes from at length discussions with my tuner (EFI Logics/Cobb) specifically on my 02 WRX about about this.

+1 except I don't categorize the jetta as bitch cars lol. I see a lot more jettas that artist look good and make decent power than I do civics and srt4s. But I do hate how it's so hard to make power out of subarus safely. My brothers 5.0 has nothing but a bolt on Paxton kit (6000 for kit and labor) and it made 560 or something on a dyno jet. And people have been running these kits for years without problems. If I could afford it I d buy one but I'd never sell the Subaru for one because it's not practical for the daily commute I do and the stuff I Carry for work.
Bottom line is that I think Subaru should have used better internals!!! No performance car should have weak internals. I just don't understand why they would'nt upgrade them, Especially in the Sti. Anyways I'm done ranting, carry on. Last edited by Gregor91; 12-30-2012 at 01:23 PM. |

This thread has been an excellent read, and has caused me much amusement as I think about my (maybe) 200whp, 3600lb wagon... that's had enough power for every emergency lane change (and sprint back up to speed) or dash across traffic I've asked it to make.
Not that I don't daydream about a supercharged H6 and 6mt swap, mind you. |

Yeah it's definitely a long, hard road to 400whp :/
I'm about to try and bring my 335whp closer to 400 with my next tune (broken motor on that dyno run). Honestly, though, even 335whp is LOTS of fun on the street |

Being addicted to speed sure does suck. Lol. All that money for only 400 awhp. For the normal driver that may be scary, but not for us riders. After being on a 430 lb machine that's pushing 180 horsepower, we can't even get excited unless we're in a 1000+ horsepower Trans Am or Supra. Of course there is wheel spin to account for but the right amount of power in an AWD Rex for us is closer to 800 awhp. Now we're talking ungodly bills lol.

Shock load is what kills a clutch. I've seen 400whp cars run around on clutches rated for waaaaay under that. But they don't last long. I've also seen an entirely stock car burn out a kevlar 6 solid puck clutch because the driver was always slamming through gears. |

I wonder how easy it is to build up the newer 2013 STi's vs the older ones (2007-2011) and what the price difference is between modding the different generations?
Personally, after thinking about this for a while, I'm not really into the idea of dumping thousands upon thousands of $$$ into making my car super fast. I think to start I'll just do the bare basics (Tune/Exhaust/Etc) and go from there. Just little bits at a time. I would imagine I'll notice a difference right away once I get the turboback exhaust and tune done. I'm not expecting a world of difference, but I anticipate a nice smile on my face. I believe that my interest in the subie is a semi romantic, nostalgic awe of the wrc sti. The rumbling sound of what could be mistaken by an untrained ear as a vw bug on steroids makes me smile. The feeling of my car sliding around corners spraying gravel in all directions is absolutely exhilarating! The feel of peak boost slamming you back in your seat (not my car heh), The gc8 scoop and hood vents are classic. A passion one could call it, a love affair my wife tells me.
However, I also understand that if i put the kind of money in my subie it would take to track my car (400 WHP woohoo!!) I will still be at a disadvantage. And driving on dirt would get crazy I think. Because my entire engine is in front of my front axles. Not to mention start getting more turbo lag from larger turbos made for top end. Now Im not sure how much the AWD makes up for that, but to make the rest of the car compensate for it tires suspension more hp etc starts to look like a poor platform for extreme performance. spend a hundred grand on beefing a subie, and will it smoke a Ferrari? just buy a Ferrari for a hundred grand on eBay hehe . Plus you can still mod a Ferrari from its base platform. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferra...t_12668wt_1165 Now im not sure if the Ferrari is the best example but I know there are better platforms for all out performance. heh i just did a buncha reading and the FERRARI 360 SPIDER F1is supposedly 400bhp in 3000 lb car from factory with no turbo I love my subie and its beat from rallying every chance I get. Wont trade it for nothin. Swapped 98l automatic open diff 4 door with mostly 06 wrx suspention and brakes(sti springs and legacy gt 4.11 r160 lsd, legacy outback 4.11 5 speed) and working on last few parts for 04 sti engine 05 sti trans 180 swap. Still will be drivable street or dirt. And way cheaper than a Ferrari. Now Im rambling sorry. Love subie, but if the goal is max power and performance shouldn't it start with better platform? Sorry if it sounds like im hating, im not. but if i chose to spend 100k on my subie or by a ferrari id buy another house Just for record i know you can get more than 400whp for 100k in a subie Last edited by 707Painter; 02-07-2013 at 02:32 AM. great thread. I am a newbie subie, lol, and would like to play out my decision to get the WRX over the STI and the decision to NOT go for more/max power.
First off, this IS my first performance car, even if it is just a WRX. And although I could afford it, I chose to go with the WRX for a few reasons: 1) Im no professional driver, and would not be able to use the STI to its fullest extent without risking a crash or some crazy junk 2) WRX is STI ready, so if i DO ever want to go STI, which would be 5-10 years down the road, i could throw an STI into my WRX no prob (2013 5door), or just trade in. 3) I would only add power if I could use it all, lol, whats the point of having 400whp if Im forced to run low in all my gears. BASICALLY if I had that much power, i would certainly be doing track or rally comps, or SOMETHING that would put my money and power to good use. REGARDLESS i bought the WRX so I could do all these things if and when i want to, which i do, once i pay off the car and have a steady job with lots of cash :P |

Same exact reason I got a WRX. The STI is only a little down the road but in the meantime its better than that corolla that's for sure. I have a feeling once I get an STI I'm gonna catch a case of the mod bug. And my pockets aren't that deep right now.

I am a "Scuby Nuby" lol,... although not new to modding vehicles...Im primarily a Jeep enthusiast but after I sold my 350z and my bike, I was left missing the road and its twisties.
I read this entire string and loved it. Great info. HOWEVER, after owning my new WRX for several months now, (and nearing completion of my mod research), my answer is YES, I would like 400+ HP lol. Definitely. |
