I plan on building a crawford block from the ground up and swapping it in when my 124k mile 2.0 grenades on me. My goal is 430 on a fairly accurate dyno, but you never know I might try for more or less when I actually start.

Great post sir! I have had a 2002 wrx, a 2004 sti with a bigger turbo and top mount intercooler (which was fun), and now another 2002 wrx with a hybrid build. I would like to say with a 400+ whp scoob and all the mods to make her go oh so fast, its not a bad idea to throw in some upgraded breaks to make her slow down better too! This hobby is all about feeling good and having fun at the end of the day but we also want to make it home at the end of the day too. Drive safe friends!
Again great post and thank you for taking the time! |

I am in the middle of a rebuild on my 04 STi, I am aiming for dependable daily driver at 370hp, (what it was before I started rebuilding the motor), but also building it to be ABLE to handle 450-500..in case I want more in the future.

Check out the built motor and PPB forums for some ideas. A built block and Dom 1.5 ought to get you there, for a vague starting list.

I bought my wrx in 2010, when I was 20 years old. At the time, it made 310 at the wheels. Guess how long the motor lasted? A month. I finally finished the engine build a couple of months ago, and have so much more respect for the power. Thankfully it blew up when it did, because driving like such a bro dude bro, would have killed me or someone else.

Depends on who you are though... I've been making well over 300whp for a long time now and the car feels tame for me. However, my wife and people who aren't familiar with high performance cars are terrified of it.
I agree on the passing part too, my car goes from 30-100 in right around 7 seconds. After the last setup change i noticed how quickly it accelerated on my way home when passing on the highway. Mindfulness and throttle control, along with knowledge of speed application, helps though. If the car in front of you is doing 50mph, you really only need to go about 60 to walk right past them. Maybe I think backwards but in a faster car I'm less inclined to drive fast. Sure, I have my short fun bursts from time to time but usually nowhere near traffic. It's just self control really. When I drove a 60hp crx i floored it everywhere and did 20 over regularly... This car never sees above 5 over in daily driving and less than 1/4 throttle is used. I know how quick my car is, I don't need to floor it everywhere in order to prove it to myself. Good writeup though! I personally don't feel 400whp on a heartbreaker dyno is that fast but I do see where you're coming from on a noob's standpoint. Sent from my LG-LS970 using NASIOC mobile app |

Yeah, and the role of awd in a quick launch in not to be underestimated. It's why a WRX can beat a Nissan 370Z--which has nearly 80 more horsepower and is lighter--to 60 mph.

I couldn't afford to drive a 400hp car as a daily driver so I decided to spend the money I did have on courses to track drive and motorcycle track.I soon realized after two summers of these courses just how pointless it really would have been owning a 400hp car on public roads!!
My wrx does just fine besides tickets are a real budget killer |

Same here owned a 587whp supercharged. 06 mustang GT - drove it everywhere should have left it at that stage. Now it's a 80mm turbo drag car that sees the track maybe once every 3 years but it makes good power for the street it's def not the baddest thing at the track |

Haha why would anyone want 400 whp?? I came from a ram hemi into my wrx and well...totally different driving experience and i haven't even pushed it yet since it is new. From what ive experienced so far my stock wrx is enough....
But im sure that will change slightly a year from now lol |

400HP? Need to figure how
400hp. I wonder if I can do that on my 98 Subaru Impreza. But still need to figure out what engine type fit in there. EJ22 need to be replace with something newer.

Have seen far too many morons with built cars that are pathetic drivers, truly scary horrible lack of car feel and control. Kids that loop the car when the back end steps out. They don't even turn into the slide, just hold the wheel straight as the car goes around. Very simply could save it with a quick correction***8230;.it's bad. Instructing can be some hairy shizz. |

I only wanted 250-300 at first... It wasn't enough... When I get the car back it should be 450+

I just recently put down 408 WHP on a Mustang dyno (stcok STI reads about 240). I must say, it is basically too fast for the city streets. I consider myself a responsible person, so I don't have a problem with it, but you really cant use that kind of power around town. I do a quick 2nd gear pull (not even to redline), and I'm at 70mph before you know it.
Having said that, I wouldn't change a thing. The car is a blast. |

my thoughts on this, before i ever consider going to 400hp i would spend the bucks on breaks and suspension having the hp does not matter if you cant control it
