Question WT - Where to tap in with Mechanical WATER TEMP

Where have you guys tapped in with your water temp guages?

I can offer you two choices, but I'm sure there are other ways to do this.

1) You can T-off a coolant temperature sensor on the engine block. I don't know what threads it takes.

2) For my car, I made a custom adapter for the WT gauge. www.geocities.com/matsut_rpi00/autometer2.html You can buy a pipe from a hardware store, make a hole in the middle, tap it with a proper thread size, cut the upper radiator hose in half, and install the pipe in between the hoses. I've been driving around like this for 1.5 years (about 25,000 miles).

Why are you installing a mechanical coolant temp gauge? If the line or gauge itself should ever leak or rupture you will have hot coolant inside the passenger compartment. An electrical gauge is a much better and safer idea and just as accurate.

Mulder... it is a mechanical guage meaning not an electronic sender with wires... copper prob..

Right- which means it operates by piping coolant into the gauge, so you now have the possiblity of a nasty leak inside the car.

No, no coolant in cockpit. The probe is sealed; a thermocouple of sorts, that goes into the coolant supply. It is connected by a length of copper to the guage - probably works off of the principle of dissimilar metals to create a small charge. It does not however use an electrical sender and wires going to the guage.

Maybe we aren't talking on the same wavelength. When I say electronic guage, I mean like what is on my old Jeep. It has a little brass probe/sender that goes in near the thermostat and grounds to the block. A wire with a terminal on it plugs on the top of the sender and runs to the guage. That isn't what I have. For all I know, some may still call it an electical guage, but I've always heard them called mechanical. If I am wrong, I apologize for the confusion.

bringning back this topic instead of making a new one... Same question here. The probe for the gauge is huge (maybe 2'' by .5''), so I'm not sure about putting it in the rad hose. I'm afraid it will restrict the coolant flow. B-Kerr, if you're still here, how did you installed it?
