Help me put a nagging suspicion to rest
About a year ago I bought my 2012 WRX, and I love it as much today as I did then. I've been shopping around for a new shifter boot and I've started to think lately about the height of my shifter. I ordered the Subaru short shifter from the factory but I've started to have the suspicion it was never installed and I just got the normal factory one. Is there anyway to tell from the actual length of the shifter? For some reason I just thought there was a linkage difference, I could be wrong though. If I measure from the silver center console in front of the change tray it's 6-3/4" high. If I measure from the front of the boot (where the faux leather connects to the console) its 6-1/4". If there's no length difference, how can I tell?

The Subaru OEM short shifter is hardly noticeable to begin with. But what makes you think it wasn't installed?

Having driven both, I can assure you the SPT shifter is marginally better than the stock shifter, at best. I really hate the feel of mine and will one day get the Kartboy when I feel like doing something about it. If you drive a normal shifter, you will notice a slight difference but, what you will ultimately feel most, is a massive sense of being ripped off by paying for this crappy option.

a short shifter has nothing to do with the length of the shift lever
a shortened shifter DOES this is a common misconception and a product of lack of education on what is and what isnt about cars all too common here |

A midget driving a manual would also be considered a short shifter.

Is there a short shifter that doesn't shorten the shifter?

I'm not sure if this helps because I can't find actual dimensions, but you can see how the overall lever length is the same but the pivot point is further away from the ball and the length from the pivot to the top of the lever is shorter on the SPT SS (short throw shifter is at the top)

Has anyone tried threading the spt shifter down to that collar and cut about an inch or so off the length?

it's a slighltly shorter throw. I played around with a regular and short shifter and just liked the shorter throw on it. i think it was something like an inch shorter throw.
i didnt like the very short throws on the kartboy tho. personal preference. if u ordered one with, and its in the invoice, most likely it's preinstalled, while stuff like a sub would be port installed. can anyone verify that? |

False. There are a lot of accessories that are installed at the port when the cars come in. As a matter of fact it's very rare that we install an spt short shifter.

You are telling me that our federal government is now training customs officers at these ports to double as mechanics?

"7. What is the difference between Factory, Port, and Dealer Installed Options? PIO stands for "Port Installed Options." These items are installed on the vehicle after it leaves the foreign factory and arrives in the United States---literally "at port." Both Factory Installed Options and Port Installed Options must be factory approved. Therefore there is some price control. There are also "Dealer Installed Options" which are items added to the vehicle at the dealership. We do not list Dealer Installed Options, as they do not have to be factory approved. Since we cannot be certain of what brand or grade the dealer may choose to put in the vehicle, we cannot address this type of pricing." |
