Default 2006 STI, blinking cruise without CEL

Having a really weird (non?)issue over the last 3 days where, occasionally, after starting my car, I have been getting a flashing cruise without CEL.

Cruise functions fine and no DTCs can be pulled from the ECU (cannot pull cruise-specific DTCs without SSM). Clicking cruise on, then off resets the blinking indicator. This has happened twice now.

The third incident (which actually took place between the other two) was a little different, in that I did get a CEL (P0223), which indicates a TPS issue. This time, the car appeared to be in limp mode, and I couldn't get a throttle response out of the pedal itself, though I was stopped so I only tested it to around 25-35% pedal position.

I reset the DTC, and everything seemed fine.

Due to the intermittent nature, I would lean towards an electronic component going out (DBW assembly?), with a second guess of a wiring condition.

Anyone had similar symptoms before something decided to take a dive?

Could be the dbw system or a common issue otherwise would contribute to a loose or defective gas cap???

Wouldn't that be an EVAP-related CEL?

Yes and will cause your blinking cruise and limp mode, is just a thought besides otherwise.

P0223 is a TPS/Pedal position CEL, not EVAP, but I think I figured out what the problem was:

I had a Brodit dash-mounted iPhone charger/cradle with a hard-wired 12V to USB converter. I realized a few days back that the 12V to USB module had burned out. I also noticed that ever since my phone stopped charging, I haven't had the Cruise/CEL issue.

Sounds like failing electronics possibly causing a voltage fluctuation on ignition. Considering how sensitive the ECU is to voltage changes, I'm gonna take a wild guess and say this was the issue.

I'll follow-up if there are any other developments - fingers crossed that it's been resolved.

Got the replacement 12V to 5V (USB) adapter and wired it in. Problems came back within a day (and worse than before).

I experienced blinking Cruise, blinking Cruise & CEL w/no throttle (both on start-up, and in traffic), racing throttle (just like the whole Toyota ordeal), sporadic throttle.

Pulled the in-line fuse to the adapter and problems disappeared. Looks like wiring a non-FCC/CE certified switching power supply into a DBW car isn't such a good idea...

I may try to do some lab testing on this power supply itself (for the hell of it), but I'll need to source a LISN and oscilloscope... sure was nice having all this test equipment on hand back in college.

Now that I think back, when I originally wired this in, the FM radio reception used to completely drop off when the phone was plugged in. Once I re-attached the antenna amplifier to the glass, that problem went away but it was clearly putting conducted emissions into the system.

Bet China hacked your car.

I had an issue on my 08 WRX where I would get the random flashing cruise light, turned out to be one of the wheel speed sensors for the ABS.
