Question 2002 Turbo or 2002 2.5 ??? Which one would you buy???

OK The new pics of the car in motion look a little better, but here is a real kicker of a question.

Which one would you buy? A 2002 $20,000 2.5RS or a 2002 $26,500 Turbo?

I would consider the 2.5 for the following reasons.
1). 220-230hp NA for 3-4k. "We know its possible"
2). 300+hp for 6.5k "again we know its possible"
3). Your going to throw away much of the items like suspension, brakes, tires, etc anyway. So you can make your car killer.

Anyone else grown found of their phase II SOHC 2.5 and think the turbo may be a bit rich for 215hp that your going to throw away much of the crap anyway.
Oh yeah does anyone know the status of the multi link rear end?

Bonus, maybe the 2.5RS wont have a sunroof!!!

Thoughts, comments, opinions???

Yes, it's possible to get 300 hp out of an EJ25 while only investing $6,500 but that's pretty tough. Minnam kit + TEC II will cost you that much (probably a little more actually). Then you have to do all the work yourself, and have a car that is emissions illegal with no warranty to speak of.

And everybody keeps whining about the US WRX having 215 hp... I don't understand that. That is 50 more than the RS... that can be increased by another 50 by simply putting on a boost controller... I'm also sure the WRX include a lot more goodies than just a turbo engine to justify a $6,500 price difference...

That being said, there is no way that I'm getting rid of my 2.5 RS. I think that 2.5 liter engine is a great platform to build on. So what if it can't take much boost, it still has enough torque at 5 psi to make things interesting. I can't wait until the WRXs hit the states, so I roll one up and smoke it.

Ask your insurance company first about both models Turbo and n/a and see how much of a quote they come to you for your 2002 stock Turbo Impreza.

This could be very convincing too! Remember, what's the most stolen car in Autralia?

That's right: Subaru Impreza WRX!!! until Subaru finally put in an immobilizer...Let's see if this will be a stock feature for our 220hp WRX...

Talking

I'd buy the WRX...why:
1. I already have a 2000 2.5RS, the WRX would looked good parked next to it.
2. I need a car that's a little more roomy (family & all), the RS is a coupe, I can get the WRX in a 5-door wagon!

I hope it's at the International New Car Show in Tampa this November!

Thumbs down

There is no comparison.

I was riding my mountain bike yeterday up Daley Canyon and noticed a glimmer out of the corner of my eye. It was a late model Bluish Purple (sorry I'm color blind) Impreza RS. This is a beautiful car, a classic. Subaru could only hope to match the beauty of this car with the new WRX.

They failed miserably.

Someone please post a picture of the RS side by side with the new Neon.

Don't buy the new car. How much is a Turbo engine worth to you?

Instead, buy a new RS and transplant the 2.0 engine into it

Well since we all like to do mods that eliminates teh whole warranty talk. Doing anything to either of the models will void the warranty. My Impreza is already half way there so why stop now. A used RS can be had at a good price. Especially when you consider ownly is selling his for $19,500 with all the work already done to it. Then if later on down the road you want the stock turbo you can find one in a wrecking yard to use as a donor. The insurance on a stock turbo car also sucks! Go ask the Mitsu GSX crowd how much they were paying. Besides why start paying off a car all over again?

Not many people here are going to trade in their 2000 model RS for the 2002. It just doesnt make since especially since the new cars seem kinda,,, well ugly.

But what I really want to know is the merrits of buying the turbo inlight of our very capable 2.5 engine.

If you didnt have your car and you knew everything you know now would you even consider the turbo.

The NA option seems really tempting, all things being equal would you like 220 2.5l NA hp or 215 turbo 2.0l hp?

I dont know how the NA car would run, would it be competitive?

Any answers out there?

Ok, I'll ask, which pix are the real pix of the next impreza? I don't know, so saying my opinion based on looks (a big part of buying a car, to me) is a wash...

However, i am a big proponent of factory warranties... I know that many of you will upgrade your rides as soon as you puirchase them, but for me, the money is a bit tighter... I like the turbo at 215 simply because it is the only one available, and it'll be covered by waranty... If i blow up my engine, i'd like it to be replaced wo charges, I don't have enough money to just throw away...

Sure the insurance would probably suck, but have anyof you asked the insurance people abouth covering a modified car? and if it wasn't covered, what happens if you get hit?

Well if the car gets hit isn't the damage usually to the body of the car and not the engine? Even then you would end up with the replacement cost of a new EJ25 and tranny. You could find one at a wrecking yard, do the work yourself and save the difference. It also doesn't mean the turbo gets broken unless you are hit so hard that you are lucky to walk away from it. In which case you would be getting a lawyer and seeing them in court. I agree though that if your on a tight budget the aftermarket turbo on the 2.5 may not be a good choice. Until you realize that you will spend the same amount to by the stock turbo model as you would to buy a used RS and add the turbo yourself. You could also buy the current RS and just wait for someone to wreck their new turbo. That is what I intend to do. Get a turbo for the 2.5 and drive the hell out of it. Later on down the line I can always swap out a possibly blown engine for the salvaged EJ20.

errr 220hp N/A 2.5RS? Do share how this can be achieved without spending blowing up your wallet?! gee.... gas must be cheap these days as I noticed ppl are sniffing them again.
Seriously a turbo 2.0l would be an easy power upgrade than a n/A 2.5. Look at the 1.8T and comapred it with a VR6.
Stop kidding yourself.
It's like yup, I'm keeping my trusty celeron 300 that I can bring to 450mhz while you can buy a 500mhz and up from there.... which one is the better buy in the end?

The fisheye ones are real
We mite not even have the choice. Some magazines and people are saying we will only get the NEW IMPREZA RS and not a turbo for a while.

My 1999 RS will be sold and I will buy the Turbo. Wagon if possible.

Sorry, many on this board have never felt the power of a modded Turbo-Charged car. I have, and it's addictive.

I used to have one in my Eagle Talon.

I have many friends with DSM's. Not one of them Stock and many in the 13's, 12's and 11's for 1/4 times. (And many broken parts too for those in the 11's) All as daily drivers.

I can and will do this to my Subaru. I can and will race in Street Mod. I can and will whoop some Mustang Butt.

Now weighing the cost of a NEW RS vs. a NEW Turbo as the original question went (Nothing about getting a used one N/A )...

I don't believe that the cost difference is going to be $6.5K. But maybe it will. Who Knows. Insurace more? Only a few hundred dollars a year for me. I'm a good doobie over 30.

You just can't get 220 HP for 3-4K from a 2.5 RS. (It's more like $5-$6K) Just as you can't get 300 HP for $6K on a 2.5RS. (It's more like $7-$8K)

But here's what I'm going to do. IF the turbo is $26K I will dump about $2K MAX in power mods and that should get me close to 300HP in the Turbo Form. $28.K. (Custom Exhaust, Hi flow cat, Headers, K&N, Plugs, wires, fuel pump, manual boost control, struts/shocks) to make a good SM auto-x car.

That's $8K over a 2.5RS. But for that $8K on 2.5 will get it maybe close to 300 HP. At least the 2.0 Turbo was MEANT to be pressurized.

This is going to be a war soon once the turbo is released.

We'll see.

I agree with KC: There's nothing like a Turbo car modded out! I get to drive Pilot's 994 Turbo S on occasion and whoa! There's just nothing like it. And I have driven a non-modded 944 Turbo, so I have a basis of comparison.

When it's time to buy a new car I'll be buying a Turbo: Hopefully the WRX wagon, if it's available.
