i can't afford a WRX tranny, and you need new pres plate and clutch and flywheel setups, as the clutch on all turbo subarus is entirely different using a fixed throw out bearing instead of a diaphram style like our non turbos, need to watch the budget, new stuff from shield would run somewhere in the 5-7 grand price range too much for me.
just need to know if the 99 will fit 98 jon |

The hot setup will be Automatic (I know, it is even hard for me to type it). The Sube (even WRX)trannys do not work well with gobs of power. Can you say paddle shifter??? I am leaving home this morning to spend several days with the first one, and don't know what will happen, but will keep the iboard posted...look for a used automatic.

Hello,
I think ravent fell off the deep end. The '99 tranny will fit nicely on the '98 block. The only issue that will arise in that direction (more arise in using a '98 on a '99) is the starter. The '99 tranny expects a stud from the block, through the tranny, onto which the starter is mounted. To fix this issue, I drilled about an inch or so into the tranny to widen the hole through which the stud goes. Then I dropped an allen bolt into the hole (round head fit perfectly and submerged so tranny was still flat against block). The starter now sits on the already existing stud and that allan bolt. Pat used a different technique, though I don't remember what he did. Either way, my solution took me about 30 minutes to dream up, fetch the bolt and nut from the hardware store, and implement. Note, our trannies are about as strong as WRX trannies - I know, no one has proven this yet, but WRX trannies blow up their second gears pretty commonly on modded cars in the 280+ hp range. That's why the 280 hp R/RA variety have hardened gearsets. So there is no point to getting a WRX tranny unless it's an R/RA. And then at that price point, you might as well have Trey build you a custom box which will probably prove to be stronger than an R/RA gearset (much like MRTs and Prodrives sets are stronger than R/RA sets).
