Default Read a map on 2007 STI

Im trying to help out a friend read from his ECU. ECUFlash keeps timing out though. My question is on 2007 do you have to connect the green connectors to read ? Not sure if it only reads or you need to flash a new map ?

Thanks

tl;dr, These [green connectors] should only be connected when reading/flashing the ECU, NOT logging
