AVCS / ECU Question
Hi All,
I have a car here, its an 02 WRX with a full EJ257 swap. Its currently running on the stock 02 computer. The AVCS oil lines are hooked up, but obviously they arent setup electrically because they are not supported on this ecu. This car is running a custom bracket for the cam sensor, and is also TGVless. I was wondering if it was possible to use the EJ207 ecu to run this motor or if there was some sort of electronic incompatibility? Ive heard conflicting info, I am not sure why this would not work. yes you can run acvs with ej207 ecu but you have to change cams also, cause 257 and 207 cam angle trigger is different. camshaft position sensors are same

That is the most straightforward answer Ive seen in a long long time. Im using the 02 style sensor on the 257 now though, picking up off the cam gear instead of the camshaft with a custom bracket (like the cosworth one). Would the camshafts still need to be changed?

cosworth or other brands cam angle sensor brackets main aim is to run avcs heads in non avcs engines like you did so that i thought you have to take the home signal from the original place to run avcs correctly. we made that thing in some ej207 edm car, ej257 engine and head swap, you just have to make some little work on the sensor bung if needed and use 207 cams with edm/jdm type angle trigger.

Today i check out the 207 257 swaps we made to remember the work we did.
257 has only 2 sensors on both camshafts which they also act as camshaft position sensor while working as avcs sensor, 207 has 2 avcs sensors on the position as same as 257 sensors and also has a camshaft position sensor at the cam gear(like wrx) so when using an 207 ecu on 205 harness with 257 head, you have to use 207 cams (for cam angle trigger) and also you have to make wiring for additional avcs sensors(it has to be shielded). I guess a company is making adapter harness for this type of situations but i cant remeber the name. search nasioc i guess you can find it. |

Awesome info here. I'm in the same boat.
Allthough I have EJ207 single avcs motor in the car atm. and building EJ257 (from 2008 edm sti full with dual avcs heads and sensors, no intake mani) as for spare motor. Swapping it when the 2.0 decides to let go, still going strong at 120.000km though. So this is just sanity check that I got everything right: For the EJ257: I need to lock the exhaust avcs gears (to 17deg retard, 0deg overlap position) and leave sensors and solenoids in place. Plugging the oil galleris in the camshaft. Think I cannot use exh. cams out of the EJ207 as the oil sealing is different? Then take the intake cams and sensor (all 3) out of the EJ207 and use them for single avcs usage. And the front cam position sensor needs aftermarket bracket as the EJ257 heads dont have it on back of the left hand intake gear. Then bolt on drive-by-cable intake manifold, and swap the motor in? anything critical I'm missing? Thanks! Last edited by khalonen; 04-30-2012 at 11:10 AM. |

Instead of starting my own thread, I figured I'd just bring this one back to life
I'm buying an 02 WRX wagon that has a full 06 STI swap in it. The car is drive by cable running the EJ205 ECU that has been tuned. While the car makes great power and runs well, I want to get AVCS working and have the tuning benefits of an EJ207 ECU. I searched around and found this, but I want to confirm a few things before I start buying parts. To get AVCS to work I need: -EJ207 ECU -EJ207 cams (Are these really necessary if the car is going to be tuned?) -A harness to hook it all up: This one right? Any input would be greatly appreciated! |

i got told the 207 cam sensor will not work in a 257 head the head has to be be modded to except the 207 cam sensors and what i did is
257 built bottom end 207 big port heads machined to 257 chamber 207 cams 207 ecu and stabilizer 207 spec c intake without tgv because the 207 ecu dont use them from what i heard but u can get 257 heads put 207 cams in there and get a 207 cam sensor at the right angle. it is possible but its a pain to do. i got told my way is the easiest way to do it without a full sti dbw conversion |
